Perfect for Earth Day or any day in Inner City communities.
I've read this book repeatedly to different elementary classes, Kindergarten to 5th Grade, and they always love it, because, in part, they can see their own communities reflected in the events. The illustrations are realistic and very lovely. The story can be enjoyed by all ages, but for the older students, it is especially useful in initiating discussion about how change can be accomplished. There are even details about how to go to City Hall and get granted the use of a vacant lot as a community garden, which is important. Another equally topical book, "Wanda's Roses", tells a similar story, but without that civic involvement factor.Highly recommended.

I love sharing this book with my 2nd graders because it shows the actual process of an abandoned lot turning into a beautiful community garden when a young girl engages the support of her neighbors. And there is the opportunity for them to empathize with the grumpy "old man hammer" when they understand why he is unhappy. Good story!
