What is the difference between red and purple stitching?

The color of the stripe makes no difference. Its the width that makes the difference.

Can this be used with ethanol fuel?

It is a wick so it woukd travel up the wick, but i have never used ethanol as a fuel so i am not sure if the wick and ethanol would burn together or just the ethanol

Is this actually flat or is it a flat round tube?

It is a flat wick. We use it in an oil lame that is from the 1800s.

Can this be be use for self water plants, will this rot?

I have used this wick for oil lamps for quite some time, and no appearance of rot has ever appeared. I wouldn't think so, but I have no experience using this wick in the medium of water.
