which port on this display provides over 60hz refresh? is it on the DP?

Answering for the VG32VQ1B - both HDMI and DP do. On querying with ASUS support, the VG32VQ1B monitor has HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.2a. The manual states that both ports support up to 144 Hz on 2k resolution, however interestingly only the Displayport is listed as supporting 165 Hz. It's also worth noting that according to Displayport specs, v1.2a does NOT support HDR - therefore HDR will only be supported on the HDMI port (I have tested this and confirm HDR via HDMI works). The next issue is that G-sync and variable rate refresh (VRR) is supported on Displayport 1.2a but NOT HDMI 2.0b (VRR is supported in HDMI 2.1). Freesync Premium IS supported over HDMI 2.0b though. Therefore if you want HDR and framerate sync, then you can ONLY get this with an AMD graphics card. If you don't want HDR, then you can use G-sync via the Displayport and therefore use a Nividia graphics card. So - if you have an AMD card - use HDMI and you're golden; if you have an Nvidia card, use displayport, but no HDR for you I'm afraid.

If I have a nvidia graphics card will g sync work on this monitor?

In 2019 Nvidia enabled G-sync on some monitors without the proprietary G-sync hardware via a driver update. I believe this utilises the Vesa adative-sync protocol which is optionally supported over Displayport 1.2a and fully supported in 1.3 and later as well as HDMI v2.1. The 32 curved 165Hz version of this monitor (and probably other models, I just haven't confirmed with Asus for the other models) have Displayport v1.2a and HDMI v2.0b ports - the reports of folk getting g-sync working over the displayport suggests that the implementation on this monitor does support Vesa adaptive sync. As such - yes, g-sync appears to 'work' but note it is not fully supported nor does it use the proprietary Nvidia g-sync chip, and Asus themselves state that g-sync is not supported. It is also worth noting that HDR is NOT suppported on Displayport v1.2a or 1.3 (it is in v1.4). HDR is supported in HDMI v2.0b - therefore if you want framerate sync AND HDR then unfortunately you are restricted to AMD graphics cards only. A disappointing move from Asus who really should be using DP v1.4 on modern monitors.
