Spectrum Math Workbook, Grade 7

This book gives instructions and examples. It's comprised of material taught in 7th grade. My son struggled, so I'm using the book to get him caught up.I will say that I've been having him skip the Pre-test, because it's designed to see what he knows so there's no instruction there. I have him do the actual assignments and the post-test.

Vocabulary was lacking. There was a presumption of the student having learned basic aspects. I’m a teacher, I can fill in the blanks. I wouldn’t hand it to a student and say, “refresh yourself by practicing with this.”

I am using this book to homeschool my grandson. We live in different parts of the country so it’s being done long distance. I chose the book because of the price. I needed one for him and one for me. The book has good problems to solve, but it’s been a while since I taught and this book doesn’t help the person who needs a refresher course of 7th grade math. Usually when I have the answers I can remember how to solve the problems, but a lot of the answers are wrong! Not good.

Cracked the new book open with my nephew today. I was surprised to learn on page 7 that, "The absolute value of a number is a number that is the same distance from zero on a number line as the given number, but on the opposite side of zero." Well, what do you know?The book IS densely packed with practice problems, so we did not make it much further. Time will tell what other pearls are to be discovered!
