Very useful book for all dog owners
Good book written by a very competent trainer. The YouTube videos that accompany the text are entertaining and informative - sometimes seeing it done is better than having it written out, while other times the opposite is true. The book and channel complement each other well. There are only two reasons why this book gets 4 stars instead of 5. One reason is that it is unnecessarily prejudiced against the use of negative feedback in training. If you raise a healthy happy puppy you may very well never need to use negative stimuli or physical corrections in your training, but for people adopting dogs with serious behavioral problems and/or aggression there may be no alternative. For serious and ingrained aggressive behaviors the patience required for positive training techniques may be unrealistic. That said positive training is far superior in 99% of cases for all of the reasons Zak eloquently describes. Secondly, he tends to obfuscate the reality of gene-based behavioral differences in dogs. Just like pointers are inclined to point, retrievers retrieve and herders herd; so too are dogs bred for fighting inclined to fight, heelers to nip heels, and guard dogs to guard. While it's true that many or all of these behaviors can be trained out by consistent positive training, you do not start with a blank slate and acknowledging that helps people develop realistic expectations for their dogs.

I'm impressed!
I wish I'd had this book before adopting my first dog last year and my new one a couple of months ago. If you're planning on getting a dog, or even have one already, I highly recommend this book. Zak doesn't just teach you how to train your dog and build a strong bond with them. I mean, look at the table of contents. He starts with the very beginning: things to consider before getting a dog, and how to prepare for bringing them home. I really like Zak's method of training. He encourages the use of positive reinforcement and "inside out" training - essentially, getting your dog to think for itself and learn that way - instead of the old methods of physical correction, intimidation, or asserting dominance. I admit I've tried to use some of these old methods, as well as things like bittering sprays, and they weren't very effective for long, if at all. After reading Zak's book, watching some of his videos, and trying his advice on my newly adopted one-year-old border collie mix, I've noticed a difference in just a month and a half. She now rarely ever chews on things she isn't supposed to, and goes straight to her Kong or Chuck It balls for relief. She hasn't soiled my floors for a few weeks. She already knew basics like "sit", "no", stay", etc., but I've reinforced her understanding and obedience with the tips given in this book, and I've even taught her "leave it/look at me" - SUPER handy because she grazes a LOT and will eat just about anything she can get ahold of. She's still not perfect at it, but I'm sure with time and patience, we'll get there - no muzzle necessary. Long story short, his methods have proven to be effective, and his writing style is great; it's very personal and friendly.

Best dog training book I've seen
Dogs have a lot to teach us about unconditional love, play, learning to enjoy the small things in life, and not holding grudges. We also have a lot of things to teach our pet, but how can we learn to effectively communicate and train our pup without losing patience? Each dog learns a little differently, but in this book Zak George provides a not only humane way to train, but a way that succeeds. He gives detailed, easy step-by-step training techniques that not only train the dog, but the human as well. The layout is well done and easy to follow and easy to navigate when you're wanting to work on specific skills. The Kindle edition almost seems a little better, since it has the video links right in the book, but links are easy to find even with physical edition. Outcome So Far: I started watching his Youtube videos when I got two puppies and this book goes into a little more detail on his topics plus a few additional ones. Since adopting his training tips from this book as well as the videos, I've seen leaps and bounds in communication with my two dogs. Admittedly, mine came kennel trained, are obsessed with grooming (teeth brushing, fur brushing), loving bath time, ignore cars, and haven't learned all the tricks he teaches yet (since we haven't gotten to all of them) so I can't attest to all the techniques. The ones I've tried, however, have done wonders. They sit, they stay consistently (even from far distances and with distractions), His technique for getting them to speak was the only one that worked (I tried about 6 or 7 others out there before I found his). His leash training technique got my dogs walking without pulling in less than 2 weeks and they're 5 months old. Until I read his section on fetch and teaching a dog how to play Frisbee, I couldn't get my puppies to play fetch. They no longer puppy bite, steal, and almost have no jumping down. They're doing a mostly consistent fetch and it's only been a few weeks. Based on other training techniques I've looked at, they're about where most people expect a 9 months to 1 year old dog to be at. They're by no means all the way trained, but, as mentioned before, I haven't got all the way through the book yet. The basic skills, however, are pretty close to meeting expectations and they perform them better than some of my neighbor's dogs. I'm excited to see where they end up after they've graduated from learning all the tricks in this book I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a puppy or adult dog who needs help learning the ropes.

I love this book!!
When I started looking for dog training books because we had a new puppy on the way, I was so happy to find that training techniques have started moving in the direction of positive reinforcement instead of the “Alpha Dog” approach. I read 3 different books on training; 1 using the old style of training (How To Be Your Dog’s Best Friend by The Monks of New Skeet), 1 using the new (about 300 pages my dog trainer sent me), and Zak’s. The only one I actually enjoyed reading was Zak’s. It’s a really easy and fun read, as many of the sections in the book have a YouTube video to accompany the description. This is wonderful if you’re not much of a reader, as the videos are a little break from the book. I’m a big reader myself, but when it comes to learning to do something, I’m very visual. So the videos are great, and Zak is fun to watch!! You can tell he really has a passion for training and loves the animals so much. Also, his approach WORKS!! We have a new puppy. Henri, a mini Australian Shepherd. At 3.5 months old, he already knew “sit”, “lie down”, “roll over”, “look at me”, “shake”, “stand”, and “stay”. Now he’s 6 months and we’ve added “leave it”, “high five”, “bow”, “up”, and “off”. We’re working on “sit pretty”, sitting and staying until released - any time we’re going outside, and his recall. I’ve used Zak’s approach for all of these commands. It’s so fun to see him learning and enjoying himself at the same time!! Now I just need Zak to write another book with with more advanced concepts! There are still a ton of videos on YouTube I reference when I need them, but I love having a guide like a book to work through the steps.

Not as informative as expected with a book
Was hoping this book would go into more detail than what you can get from YouTube videos. But actually, Youtube videos that are free to watch give better ideas. This book just gives the reason for the behavior (like you don't already know) and then his moral opinion and then tells you to talk with your vet in every single thing discussed.

survived the puppy stage
This book has been an excellent resource in raising my Boxer puppy. I have always adopted dogs two years of age or older and this was my first puppy. The information was so helpful and has gotten Ruger and i through the puppy stage using positive reinforcement.
