The chip attached to the toner cartridge manufactured by Brother. Apparently the printer recognizes the chip as proof that the catridge is an actual Brother manufactured cartridge. Putting the chip on a third party catridge is intended to trick the printer into thinking that the cartridge was manufactured by Brother.
