Is the metal ring supposed to be loose? I can rotate it around on my pen.

If you mean the metal trim ring just above the barrel threads, it rotates on mine, but it's not "loose." Wouldn't have even noticed this if you hadn't asked, and I don't see it as posing any problem with the pen.

You do not need a pen for a left-handed writer. Fountain pens are ambidextrous. Finer nibs will be more resistant to smudging and you can get inks that dry faster in order to further prevent smudging. I'm a left-handed writer and have a full collection of fountain pens that are not "left handed." There's no need to get a specially designed nib!

Is "precious resin barrel" a fancy term for plastic?

Sorta, but not really. Yes, acrylic is a plastic. But a lot of engineering and artistic work goes into finished acrylics of this type. In this case, 'plastic' doesn't mean 'cheap'. It means a solid barrel not made of wood or metal but designed to be high quality and look/feel nice for many years.
