Can this be played on a carpet?

No not in the way the game is played maybe a remote variation of the game. The ball needs a surface to have a good straight bounce and the Jack's are swooped up by the hand smoothly then with the same hand the ball is caught. Carpeted surface eliminate both those key aspects of the game.
