I recently gave SmartGuard Premium Cleaner Crystals a try, drawn in by the promise of a thorough clean for a variety of dental appliances. Here's the lowdown on my experience: Pros: - Versatile Use: The fact that these crystals can safely clean everything from TMJ mouthguards and clear braces to dentures and night guards is a plus. It's convenient to have a go-to cleaner for different appliances. - Safe Ingredients: I appreciated that SmartGuard doesn't contain any FDA-banned ingredients, ensuring no adverse reactions like rashes or irritation, which is a serious consideration for something you put in your mouth. Cons: - Comparable to Cheaper Options: Honestly, I didn't notice any significant difference in effectiveness between SmartGuard and products like Polident. Both seemed to perform similarly, making me question the premium price. - Lackluster Stain Removal: I was hoping for some help with the built-up yellowing on my retainers, but unfortunately, SmartGuard didn't make any noticeable dent in that department. - Reuse for 7-10 Days?: The suggestion to use the same solution for 7-10 days struck me as a bit impractical. Not only is it unlikely to remain warm, but the idea of reusing a cleaning solution over several days doesn't quite sit right with me, especially for something meant to clean. Overall Thoughts: SmartGuard Premium Cleaner Crystals offer a safe and versatile cleaning solution for a wide range of dental appliances. However, when it comes down to it, the performance felt pretty on par with less expensive options already available on the market. While I appreciate the focus on safety and the lack of harsh chemicals, the overall effectiveness, especially in tackling tougher stains like yellowing, left me wanting more. Moreover, the suggestion to use the same solution over several days seems a tad unreasonable for those of us looking for a consistently fresh and hygienic clean. In the end, it's a solid three stars from me - not bad, but not exceptional either.

I bought this to attempt to remove the deep yellow staining on my translucent night guard and I'm happy to say that it's already removed about 95% of the yellowing in about 4 days of continuous soaking in the same solution when I'm not wearing it at night. While the price may seem a bit steep for those who don't feel like maximizing the packets per their 10 day advertised limit, the fact that it was able to remove the staining effortlessly makes it completely worth it for me. Prior to trying this, I'd tried some of the DIY home methods of soaking and brushing it in hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and vinegar to no avail so when this worked, I was super relieved and very glad to have purchased it. For daily cleaning, it also works as advertised. Previously I'd been following the general recommended cleaning method of brushing it with antibacterial hand soap which worked for general cleaning but obviously wasn't thorough enough to prevent staining. When I remove the night guard from the solution for wearing at night, the guard feels clean to the touch and smells clean. I haven't had the same issue as other reviewers regarding the strong chemical taste. I rinse it in cool water for about 15 seconds and it's good to go. While there is a very very subtle chemical flavor, it goes away after a few seconds of wear. Regarding the hygienic concerns of keeping the same solution out for 10 days, I don't think there's so much to be concerned about. If the solution is/stays strong enough to kill all the bacteria from your saliva/mouth/etc. on the night guard throughout X amount of days, it'll definitely be a germ free environment (given until it stops smelling/looking "clean"). For those concerned about the solution gathering bacteria or dust on the surface, you could probably just put plastic wrap over it with poked holes to allow enough air circulation. Beyond that, you could give your dental appliance another rinse/brush in hydrogen peroxide and rinse well and that should kill any remnant germs. All in all, this works, and it works as advertised. It's removed deep yellow staining and has almost restored my night guard to the translucency of when I first got it.
