We loved this book
What an adventure and just like being part of an excavation of a lost continent; this was about a garden lost to another time in history. The garden took us through what the war did to the gardens of England during a time when there were glass houses producing every fruit and vegetable you could imagine right through the winter for an entire estate including the hired help. A lifestyle of working the land and getting every benefit from it. A very well written exploration of a lifestyle otherwise lost to us forever if not for the documentation in this book.

Re Visiting Lost Garden of Heligan by book
In a trip to Cornwall 2003 we visited the lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project. Both projects developed by Tim Smit. We spent hours at Heligan which was a most enjoyable visit. I wanted to purchase the Heligan beautifully photographed book but unfortunately it was quite large and since we were doing quite a bit of visiting Cornwall and Devon it was much too large to carry around. Just recently I was looking at old pictures and decided I had to find Lost Gardens of Heligan and purchased it from Amazon. Looking at this book brings back many memories of the day we spent there. Before long the book arrived from UK and I will never get tired of looking and reading the story of Heligan. Thank you Amazon for the excellent order.Roslyn Lothridge

Magical
I have read 100s of gardening books and this one is totally unique. Social history, plant lore, and amazing gardening techniques (pineapple greenhouses, salted paths and water driven pumps). The very engaging author has written a beautiful biography of a majestic and mysterious place.

An inspirational read
Tim Smit has made a very considerable contribution to the revitalisation of English Gardens and Ecology. The first of his two books 'the Lost Gardens of Heligan' is really vibrant reading, and an insight into how he goes about doing what he does. It needs to be read as a precursor to his second book 'Eden', about the development of the Eden Project, and how that grew out of his work at Heligan.Robert Morris-Nunn

An Excellent Overview
This book was purchased following a visit to Heligan. The book gives a 'blow by blow' account of what they found there and how they set about the necessary work to bring the gardens back to where they are now. If you can imagine leaving your own garden grow its own way for 70 odd years, and bear in mind that there are 55+ acres of it, that's what has been achieved by the people who have chosen to work there, some paid, most as volunteers. I would recommend a similar book dedicated solely to their vegetable garden production if you have an interest in growing your own food!

Must read if you are visiting Heligan.
Great book and worth reading both before, and after, your visit. Also works as a stand-alone read. Thoroughly absorbing.

Labour of love
Tim Smit's story about the work to save the lost gardens of Heligan in Cornwall is a social history of gardening telling us about a world lost and brought to new life by an amazing labour of love. Fascinating read!

A really enjoyable book
I like stories of folk who through perciverance make a difference and this fits the bill perfectly, also enjoying gardening this was ideal. I felt it had a good mix of description of how the garden developed as well as the trials of opening it to the public. Would heartily recommend. I also would like to express my disappointment that Amazon gain a commercial advantage over UK competitors by not paying corporation tax. I believe this is morally wrong. If you are of the same opinion please add a comment to your reviews.
