Q: Are these supposed to be tight like compression shorts? I might need to order a size larger.

This is a difficult question. Fit depends on your shape and size. Plus, the less expensive brands vary a lot in size and materials. I’m a chubby old guy, so in this brand I take 3x which fits my thighs and belly but are on the long side. You need to know how to wear them: no underwear and the blue padding goes against your skin. The photos show the pants inside out to see the padding. Make sure to buy products you can return. Be kind: try them after bathing if you think you may return them.

Q: will they help during long motorcycles rides too?

I doubt it. It is the shape of the padding that forces me to that conclusion. When I was forty years younger, I rode a BSA 650 and a Kawasaki 3540 (twin) 750 miles in a day. My butt would really get tired. Now that I ride a bicycle I would suggest to you that the shape of the typical bicycle saddle is much different than you motorcycle seat. The bike seat is much narrower and hence so is the padding in these pants. I suggest you try and find wider padding, or find a seamstress that can make you some.

I'm not sure, but I'm 5'11'' an 95kg and this fits ok, so is XL.
