A life lived well and with great purpose
If you want to read something inspirational this season this is a good choice. It is the memoir of a man named Walter who was born in poverty in a remote village in India. At great sacrifice his parents were able to send him to school, but that schooling ended with a certificate in typing and shorthand as attending university was out of the question. Walter rode that degree and a divinely inspired commitment to feed the hungry to a career with two of the worlds largest emergency relief agencies. In that arena he designed and implemented massive food aid interventions that fed millions of starving people world wide. Despite the accolades he received over the years for these tireless efforts, Walter remained true to his humble beginnings. He lives simply in retirement and shares what he has with those who have less that live around him. His life has and continues to inspire many. This simply written manuscript describes a life lived with purpose and meaning.

Are you interested in making a difference in the world? If so, it helps to have some role models to provide guidance along the way. It provides a thorough view of Walter Middleton’s life from being a child recipient of food aid in India to becoming a globally recognized food aid expert leading the food aid programming of the largest NGO partner of the World Food Programme. Thousands (millions?) of people around the world owe their very lives to his work.Easy to read, yet full of wisdom and practical reflections, Walter shares his personal journey. And now we can all take part in his ministry of reaching out to hungry children. Sounds like a great way to start 2021! This book makes a great gift as well.

A vocation to help the most needy!
Fascinating window onto humanitarian work around the world in the last 50 years. Walter has lived an extraordinary life, and has been gifted with both a wonderful vocation and with an opportunity to do things of great importance to people in great need.

... & Serve he did...
Almost an autobiography, these detailed memoirs by Walter Middleton, describe a life guided by a deep faith – the inner compass that gives him direction & confidence to serve others while being a most pleasant friend whom I worked with from 1988 to 1999.Walter was more focused & better organized than those who employed him; a stabilizing influence amidst their frequent organizational changes; he got food to hungry people.Always a pleasure to work & socialize with, including his delightful wife & family. I’m skeptical of Christians who write about themselves but Walter is an exception. Thank you, my friend, for your service.Russ Kerr, former VP Relief & Rehabilitation, World Vision International

A great read!
It was a real pleasure reading this book! I worked with Walter in one capacity or another since the mid 1990's. It was an honor for me to work with Walter and to play a role in Walter's work. I appreciate the difference that Walter made through World Vision and WFP in helping feed and improve the lives of millions of people around the world. For me it was great to go down memory lane and revisit these events and also learn a lot more about Walter that I did not know. I appreciate Walter's Christian commitment, his leadership and his humility and focus on service!

Born to inspire!
This is a MUST read for anyone looking to be INSPIRED. Here is a story about a boy who grew up in a poor family in India, working his way up to become a leading figure in the humanitarian world, eventually responsible for the distribution of $350m worth of food to millions of starving people so that they would live to see the next day. Not just your typical memoir - but a story about HOPE, at a time when we need it most. Incredibly, every book sold will feed a starving child for a month.

An inspiring story of a life well-lived
This is an easy-to-read book that is both inspiring and instructive. It tells the story of how one life, fully dedicated to a simple but profound purpose in God’s name, can result in millions of people being profoundly helped. This is not a piece of elegant fiction. The book makes no attempt to change the world with startling insights. It is the story of a man on a mission to feed the hungry and do away with extreme hunger. The world needs more stories like this. The world needs more Walter Middleton’s!

A wonderful and revealing book about Walters life and commitment and passion.
I enjoyed Born to Serve and didn't feel like putting the book down..Walter has such a passion for life and lives it to the fullest, as illustrated in his book.Walter is committed to family and friends and all the different people and charities he is involved with. Now in retirement too, he has not stopped and in this Pandemic has worked tirelessly to help the needy and hungry and poor in the area where he lives.Walter sure had a bucket list and has successfully ticked off a lot on that list and I can't wait to read the rest of his achievements. How blessed can he be to meet the Pope too. I wish him all the best in his life, as he truly is a wonderful and caring human being.Arun Pant
