This scale only requires that it be set back to zero if you notice that the dial has moved to any number other than 0 to begin with. Otherwise it is designed to just step on for your weight reading. I cant answer that, but ours always weighed 10 pounds heavy. tried to get it re calibrated, ended up throwing it in the garbage, Not really happy with it at all.
