City of Dragons (The Rain Wild Chronicles, Book 3)

Quality is superb of the cover and pages but the price was almost double than average. Only reason i bought in a hurry is because this might be one of last few books by harper voyager published. The new books will be available in market by harper collins i think. And it'll be in different size.

Good quality book. Robin Hobb is my favorite author and This was a series that I was yet to collect. Will be buying other books in the series shortly

It took a long, long voyage down the River Wild before the dragons reached the ancient city of Kelsingra. But... they're still not there. "City of Dragons: Volume Three of the Rain Wilds Chronicles" is very much a "middle" book, with Robin Hobb juggling many established plot threads without actually bringing resolution to anything. It feels sort of like the first half of a book -- there are some intriguing scenes and potentially exciting subplots, but by the end nothing much has actually happened. The dragons and their keepers are close to Kelsingra, but it can only be reached by air -- and only one of the dragons is able to fly for any significant distance. The city itself turns out to be a wondrous place, filled with strange lingering magic and beautiful buildings -- and the new Elderling teenagers begin to discover more about themselves and their new role. But there are other problems in the outside world. Alise's estranged husband Hest is threatened by the brutal Chaldeans, and must deliver them dragon parts or Else. Leftrin travels back to Trehaug, and reveals that there is treachery in the Council. And after a heavily pregnant Malta runs afoul of the Chaldeans, she and her husband must make a desperate trek to Kelsingra to save what is most precious to them... Not a lot actually HAPPENS in "City of Dragons." Robin Hobb does introduce a couple new subplots into the half-dozen she's juggling around -- the Chaldean conspiracy, Malta's pregnancy, the love triangle around Thymara, the new Elderlings, Alise ditching her old life, Sintara being prissy and prideful, and the exploration of Kelsingra. But Hobb seems to be slowly building these plot threads towards a climax, and that's what most of the subplot development is -- slow build. It's like we're in the middle book of a trilogy. However, the lack of travel woes in "City of Dragons" allows her to flesh out the history of Kelsingra, and infuses it with an haunted, otherworldly magic that really entrances. And a couple of the subplots have a faster, more thrilling air to them, such as Malta's encounter with a pair of Chaldean murderers, Selden's imprisonment, or the ever-vile Hest's schemes and dilemmas. Hobb also reintroduces some familiar characters -- Tintaglia the dragon and Malta the Elderling among them -- and starts integrating them into the established cast of grizzled, good-hearted sailors, outcast teens and the often-grumpy dragons. The downside of the characterizations is that I'm getting a little tired of Thymara and Tats' teen soap opera, and the question of who is hooking up with whom. "City of Dragons: Volume Three of the Rain Wilds Chronicles" isn't a bad book, but it is a rather lightweight one, with several subplots being set up for the grand finale.

Schon langsam etwas traurig hatte ich geglaubt, keinen neuen Fantasy Autor mehr zu entdecken, der alle meine Wünsche abdeckt. Nach dem zufälligen Kauf von Fool's Assassin war ich dieser Sorge enthoben und habe mir alle vorausgegangen Bücher dieser Hobb-Welt gekauft und ganz unglaublich genossen. In nur einem Buch der Rainwilds Chronicles fand ich die ständigen, teils seitenlangen, Zweifel der weiblichen Heldin etwas nervig (inzwischen hatte es der Leser ja schon bis zum Erbrechen kapiert, dass sie sich sehr schwer aus Ihren Kindheitsprägungen lösen konnte und ein stark vorstellungsgebundenes Mädchen ist). Aber man kann ja auch mal ein paar Absätze weiterspringen und ich habe auch dieses Buch in vollen Zügen genossen.

I've always said that a sign of a good book is that it leaves you wanting more... and if you read the other reviews of this book, everyone wanted more from the book. But they have managed to make it into a bad thing. I would like to evaluate the series as a whole so far, simply because I see the series getting a lot of flak from what is essentially a middle book. When there is a series of books, do you single the middle one out and say "that... that was the book that made the series." No. Or at I don't, nor the people I talk to about such things, we simply evaluate a series as a whole. So that's where I'm going with my review The major issue's I would like to address as such are: 1) Some people have previously complained about the lack of character development and they felt one dimensional. This has been address in the other 2 books, you end up caring deeply about characters feelings, because of these boring repetitive tasks that they go through i find the reader bonds with them on a more personal level (because we all have boring repetitive tasks in our life) and as such the author stirs far more emotion that some of her other books, like for example what happens with tats. 2) People complained about the lack of page count the book had. But if you consider the book is a quadrillogy... and it's the authors first series with more than 3 books. The fact of the matter is this series is so big that they couldn't justify squeezing it down to 3 books. If she did that I know there would be a lot more people complaining that the series felt rushed and incomplete. I for one, would rather have an extra book that finish's off a story nicely rather than to have the series condense into something unworthy of the author. The fact the author has managed to keep the characters, each different story arc, entertaining throughout the book, and leaves the reader wanting more, just shows how good of a middle book this is. Her last trilogy, the soldier son trilogy, was not this on the second book I was bored of the characters and honestly couldn't care about what happens. But that's not the case with this book, the amount of emotions that this book puts you through is worth every penny 3) A slow to start book or a slow burner as it were. First off, the first opening chapter is full of excitement. The second chapter after that is, what I estimate to be, A key pivotal role in the series. It's a few chapters after those couple that recap on our main characters, and I personally liked the recap, not only were they doing things, so it wasn't just a straight up recap, they we're still developing as characters, which was nice. Sometimes characters change so dramatically from one book to the next, you lose the connection. Also I would like to add, that adding a recap that refreshed your memory but didn't completely bore you, saved the reader the effort of re-reading the last chapter of the previous book to catch up 4) Money making and the Kindle nonsense. Some have made ridiculous allegations that an author might profit from their work. Oh what horrendous accusations!.. if you can't tell I'm being overly sarcastic to nail my point home, let me ask you, would you work your ass off... just to give it all away for free? this is her living. She writes great novels that people buy... because shes a great writer, and nothing has changed. The way you expect her to write for you for the sheer joy of telling you a story reminds me of the arrogance of the dragons in this series. As to the kindle price, I can't believe people are letting this effect their review, amazon own kindle, you take it up with amazon if you don't like the price, as I'm pretty sure the author and publisher didn't set that price. Anyway, buy a real book... they are way cooler anyway. That's the end of the immediate issues that people were bringing up with the book. Look, its a good book, no scratch that, its a great book for what it is, it keeps you interested develops a lot of the stories more, the characters develop and change and its superbly written. What more could you ask for a middle book? also it adds new characters, which rarely happens in middle books of trilogies, and is almost unheard of in quadrillogies, not to mention that they interesting and captivating I think many people expected too much from what is essentially a story of development. they wanted answers, but those answers will only be answered in the next book... and I for one, am looking forward to it.

My sister and I had finished the first two books of the Rain Wild Chronicles. We thought the Chronicles ended there and we had enjoyed the two books a lot. Then we found there was a book three as well as a book four. Cool! However I hesitated after reading so many negative reviews about book three, City of Dragons. As I read this third installment I felt it was my favorite of the three I had read so far. I enjoyed watching the characters as well as the dragons, expand their lives and their personalities. I am not sure why so many folks thought this book wasn't up to Robin Hobbs standards. I couldn't put the book down and went right into book #4. Both volume 3 and 4 were exciting! We miss the story! Now that my sister and I have finished with the Rain Wilds Chronicles and have looked more into Robin Hobbs writings, we realize we should have read the Liveship Traders series first before The Rain Wilds Chronicles. Oh well, the Liveship books have been GREAT TOO! and many questions have been answered. Although all 7 are lengthy books, the time investment is well worth it.
