how does it do on garlic?

I have never used mine for wet items. On dried garlic it would make powdered, but it is porous on the inside so it would have to be washed well after use to avoid a forever smell....

Do you grind in a circular motion or spin in a circular motion..?

In regards to your question, simply place your item into the bowl-like mortar. Hold the pestle by the handle and, using a firm pressure, make a circular motion to grind your item into a paste or powder. Harder items, like peppercorns, may need the surface cracked before it can be ground. With a firm but gentle pressure, tap the item with the pestle, then grind into the desired consistency. What is the volume? I am looking to grind salt to a fine powder

I can grind peppercorns & pink salt into a fine powder! This saucer can grind all types of spices to a fine consistency. Tiny enough to git in a drawer, strong enough to grind spices with no effort!

Difficult to be smaller.

I didn't realise how small it was. Saw one on a Nigel Slater programme, liked the look and thought, 'Yes, I'll have one'. Placed the order, thinking I would get something similar for the price. How disappointing. Might be able to crush a couple of peppercorns.
