Do you care?
Not scary but well filmed with artistic special effects. Visually it’s dark and beautiful. Story wise it’s miserable. This is supposed to be a period piece about two kids on their own. The kids are in a horrible world with bad adults. What’s off putting is the world is depressing and so are the children. One of the children Gretal has an American accent and she’s surrounded by English/ Scottish characters. Why? How? The mother of the children is American too. She drives them off with a weak jump scare and ax.The children are chased by a loud ghoul. They meet a man who makes roasted rabbit who sends them to find work with foresters. The kids are on their own when nearly starve to death and they stay lost in the forest a long time which is pretty boring and sad. Of course they get high on suspect mushrooms. The whole time they are being stalked by a little girl and ominous shadowy woman.Gretal has decide to be good or evil but she may really have no choice. She just may have to succumb to her destiny. She’s a girl becoming a woman in a man’s world. Accepting who she really is could be her only way to freedom. Even if freedom means living in seclusion in the woods where a serial killer cannibal died. This a is perverse moral tale but it definitely not a scary horror movie. When you find out the truth of what’s going on you’ll be disgusted but that’s about it.ConsYou go to a horror movie to be scared not wallow in unhappinessScares are mostly jump scares that mostly miss the markNot a very memorable movie because it’s mostly boringA mix of modern ideas and what epoch? They know this girl is American right? The twist had nothing to do with the main characterLeaves you with lots of questions but you’re not really invested to careProsVisually it has a great aesthetic and lovely lightingSoundtrack is good

Great Retelling on an Old Classic
I sincerely didn't think this would be much of a movie, but it proved to be entertaining. I think some elements seemed rushed, but overall, it was a solid 90-minute flick with a twist ending NOT like the classic story. Worth a watch.

Enjoyed it
I enjoyed watching the movie. It was pretty much the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale made into a movie with one new twist added to it. The fairy tale is fairly simple so you should not be expecting more of the plot and story. If you are expecting a quick pace and a lot of action as if Gretel and Hansel were monster hunter action heroes by trade or if you are wanting to see in graphic detail more ways a person can be abused, restrained, tortured, dismembered and killed then you will be talking about how this film stole time out of your life. You would find it slow paced and boring and not consider it a horror movie at all since there is no worry of getting PTSD from it.If you are in the mood for a well done modern retelling of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale then I think you would enjoy this movie. One thing no one seems to mention is that it is made in 1.55 to 1 screen format - just a little wider than the old CRT TV 4 to 3 screen size so it does not fill a flat screen TV width-wise. Disappointment on my part. To me that info should be listed in the description, in fact the aspect ratio for all movies should be, so you know before you purchase. I did enjoy the movie anyway though and thought it was pretty well done for a fairy tale adaptation.

And now for something completely different
I really enjoyed this. It was a totally different interpretation of an already delightfully dreadful story. It's nice to see a fairy tail that is not silly or trying to be funny, or censored for the squeamish. It is meant to empower women in its own twisted way. Take your power. Use it. Embrace whatever nature gave you, no matter how scary it may seem to others.I have two problems with the explanation of the witch. I won't post them for fear of giving away the plot. But while she was explaining herself I was saying, "wait. what?"Other than that glitch i thought it was wonderful. I loved the hidden messages on the walls. I also noticed Hansel was wearing a red cap, which is a nod to a type of fairy mentioned in one version of the story. The witch was also kind of a man basher. But Gretel seemed to have a more tolerant attitude.I will offer a little teaser. What's up with Hansel and his obsession with axes? What or whom will he meet in his grown up life? A wolf? An ogre? Time will tell.Recommended for those of you who like a grown up fairy tail.

This is the Pretty Movie that Can't Quite Hit Its Mark
Stylish yet lacking suspense, Gretel & Hansel struggles to stay fresh at feature-length. Director Osgood Perkins clearly has an eye for the eerie, evidenced in earlier outings like I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and The Blackcoat's Daughter; that said, much like those forementioned films, Gretel & Hansel comes up feeling long-in-the-tooth yet frustratingly under-cooked.In a remarkable rebuttal to Osgood's otherwise glacially-paced portfolio, the first ten minutes or so here move along briskly, aided by Alice Krige's spot-on fairy tale narration. Likewise, his leads do their best with what they're given: Krige's onscreen presence is equal parts hypnotic and unnerving, IT-alum Sophia Lillis is a good fit for Gretel, and Sammy Leakey excels as Hansel when afforded the chance. Brief showings from supporting cast members are likewise great, although the wildly inconsistent accents across the board honestly threw me off (Lillis, in particular, seems to juggle an distinctly flat American accent during narration, yet a vaguely Irish onscreen inflection).Meanwhile, Rob Hayes' screenplay aims for a feminist spin on the familiar folk tale, but fails to give it palpable bite, leaving the movie to feel kind of like The Witch Lite sans historical accuracy. The finale alone docked the film at least a star for me, trading catharsis for a Ron Burgundy-esque question mark. Still, the movie is absolutely gorgeous at times, with Perkins and his crew clearly putting a lot of love into the framing, set design, and atmosphere. A visual feast for sure, but bereft of narrative calories.

Folklore and feminism
I love this movie. The DVD itself played very well, and the quality can't be beat. Don't trust the IMDB reviews for this one, just because it has feminist undertones, it never goes too far and gets preachy. It's beautifully shot and brimming with occult imagery and symbolism. A must-watch for anyone who loved The Witch, as this film has similar links between magic and womanhood.

Appeal to adults
Loved the movie. If you are tired when you start you could fall asleep due to the sound track etc. but the movie is not boring & very intriguing. A very refreshing version.

Not fantastic enough to watch again.
OK I admit it, I was looking for atmosphere, stunning effects, fantasy costumes, a wow factor! Errrrr no! The storyline, well I'm stumped, was there one? I couldn't find one, some of the scenes were atmospheric, the witches house was black, black oh and black! Not one I'll keep I'm afraid.

Gret et Hans
Utilisation personnel. Je l'ai regardé et trouvé ça long. J'ai déjà visionné d'autres films de Hansel et Gretel plus intéressants.
