Why is a paid sim necessary? satellite phones should let you call from anywhere without reliance on the network?

It's very similar to using a SIM card for cellular service only that satellite communications use a different network structure.

If only used in Canada and Alaska, then the Canada/Alaska prepaid is best. If you intend to use this in the Continental US or any other country, a Global card is necessary.
