New "Old School" Pencil Sharpener
If you're in need of a sturdy pencil sharpener with a vintage look then this one might be just what you're looking for. For me, the X-ACTO Ranger 55 Manual Pencil Sharpener was exactly that. X-acto manufactures these units based upon the old original designs so they end up being very close to the school pencil sharpeners some of us remember from the '60s and '70s. As you might expect, the modern version is made overseas out of somewhat cheaper materials than the "built like a tank" units of old, but not to such an extent as to "cheapen" the look or feel of the unit. The internals seem to have retained the heavy duty build of the past, including the twin helical cutter blades. The unit works great. It quickly and smoothly sharpens eight different sizes of pencils. The gloss black finish was a perfect fit in my vintage themed office. The top of the shavings container is embossed with a nice script Ranger 55 logo that completes the vintage look. I am very happy with this purchase and I highly recommend the X-ACTO Ranger 55 to anyone who is looking for a sturdy and great looking tool for their office.

Favorite Pencil Sharpener
This pencil sharpener is the one I have been wanting for years. I have used many over the years, but this one quickly sharpens to a long, centered point - without eating up the pencil. When it stops making a grinding noise, your pencil is ready. I am so, so happy to have a fine pencil sharpener that is heavy duty and works perfectly. I use #2 pencils often and other pencils for drawing. I will not use this on colored pencils. I prefer to carefully sharpen expensive colored pencils by hand with the STAEDTLER, INC. Handheld Manual Double-Hole Cylinder Pencil Sharpener. It has two lengths to choose from for the lead. The one I own is all metal on the inside, which I find better for sharpening pencils correctly. I look in the architect areas of the office supply stores for better items such as hand-held pencil sharpeners. Although now-days they have started to place the cheaper ones there also. Don't buy ones that look like plastic, they will not last; the plastic will crack soon. Oh, and it is easy to dispose of the shavings also. Just rotate the center section, squeeze, and it comes loose. It reminds me of that lovely pencil sharpener we used in the 5th grade math class. Except this one is new and shiny. Nancy

The Elusive Perfect Point
I used a Ranger 55 at a library for quite some time with excellent results. This experience, together with reviews for this sharpener and its relatively low cost lead me to buy it for my own personal use. Nevertheless, the sharpener that I received doesn't work quite as well as that which I used in the library because the points that it makes aren't quite as sharp as ideal. They aren't conical, but look like a cone with its tip cut off, albeit a very small portion of the tip. I still would rate the sharpener as very good because the tips are relatively sharp, the sharpening action disengages consistently when the pencil is sharp, which only requires a few turns, and performance is consistent. I can't comment on the durability of the dual cutters since I've only been using the sharpener for a few months, but the fact that there are two cutters rather than the one that is typically included in many sharpeners presumably implies a longer life. The overall quality of construction of the sharpener is at least good. I preferred a manual sharpener for its economy relative to electric sharpeners with dual cutters and for its simplicity, which I thought might imply a longer life. The shortest pencil that can be sharpened in this sharpener is close to 2-7/8 in. Mounting the sharpener on a wall or table is relatively simple using the enclosed screws. I mounted my sharpener on the back of closet door. In the end, I wouldn't purchase this sharpener again if I knew of a durable sharpener that delivered sharper tips consistently without issues, even if the alternative were more expensive, but I don’t know for sure what might be expected from other products.

Better than Electronic Ones
I much prefer these old style Pencil Sharpeners over these modern ones. Reminds me of school when I was a child, even though I hated school.

Exactly what we needed!!
We have gone through our fair share of pencil sharpeners and have grown to really hate the electric ones! This one is built to last! It is very solid in design and classic enough to blend in with any decor. I have mine mounted on the wall in my dining room and it's sleek black design fits perfectly. It doesn't draw attention to itself at all. It sharpens perfectly and as you turn the handle you can feel how sturdy the insides of this thing are as it grinds against the pencil. It has the different settings for different sized pencils (and possibly even crayons :)) Definitely worth the money! If wall mounting this sharpener you will need to mount it to a stud. I made the mistake of just throwing it up there thinking it would be Ok but it pulled out of the wall within 2 days.

Low Quality manufacture causes off-center sharpening ~ will make you spend more money in the long run!
It's not hard to get a pencil sharpener wrong these days. After all, people don't really use pencils all that much... Or do they? Short Review: This sharpener is made with low tolerances and is of low quality. Unreliable "Multi-hole function" creates off-centered pencil sharpening causing leads to appear "askew" after sharpening when, in fact, they are not. Recommend avoiding this sharpener unless you need to make use of different diameter pencils. If you are like any other general user (using standard sized pencils) - just pick up a pencil sharpeners that specializes in that size alone. Long Review: Had an electric sharpener that finally gave out on me after years of use. Decided to buy a "full metal" one and manually operated (so not dependent upon batteries) as a replacement. Looked over all the other sharpeners (as it is so easy to do here on Amazon) before selecting this one. Apparently, this one got the highest reviews and looked sturdy/flexible enough for me to pass down to my kids. I was thinking, "If one day ten years into the future the consumerism department of pencils suddenly decide they want to change standard pencil sizes so people would have to buy new sharpeners, I wouldn't have to! nyah nyah nyah!" I really thought I had them this time. Out-"thunk" them, even. Boy, was I wrong! Unfortunately, whatever quality that existed "back in the day" does not exist today. I have pencils already sharpened by my electric sharpener (R.I.P. old friend) that needed resharpening, and this one failed to product a suitable, useable tip. Standard pencils sharpened by this sharpener came out unaligned and off-center. The hateful wooden "spike" of spite which so annoyingly runs along the side of the lead during improper sharpening was apparent in all sharpenings using this unit - while absent from the electric unit. I thought it was because I was applying pressure incorrectly. Maybe I was "pushing down" on the pencil during sharpening? Nope. It is caused by improper alignment of the front circular plate with all the pencil size cutouts on it. It is simply not aligned properly. The rotating sharpener blades inside are much wider than normal (to accomodate larger diameter pencils). If the circular cut out that holds your pencil in place during sharpening is just slightly off center, your pencils all come out with that horrible wooden "tooth" running along the edges of the lead. Yup. After so many years of producing this item, you would think that they could have fixed that at some point... Not on these units! If you use standard pencils most of your days, get a pencil sharpener that specializes in sharpening that pencil correctly. Ultimately, you would be saving money in reducing the number of pencils you have to buy due to bad sharpenings. Otherwise, this sharpener is something like a "swiss army knife" of sharpening. It can fit multiple sized diameters of pencils, but it does so imperfectly. Unless you require those other diameters, I would recommend avoiding this unit, and just getting a unit which sharpens your specific type of pencil. I purchase these items with my own hard earned pennies, if you found my review helpful, please share some love and click that "helpful" icon! Thank you for reading this far! EDIT as of Feb. 5th 2018: Here is my recommendation for a superior standard sized pencil sharpener - and my reasons why: Desert Song Manual Pencil Sharpener Hand-Cranked (yes, I also bought this unit with my own money). At this time of writing, this unit costs $9.99 on Amazon (approximately 30% cheaper than this unit at $15.01). The Desert Song is centered, and can only be operated after "clipping" the standard pencil to the guider. Also, unlike the X-ACTO Ranger 55 Manual Pencil Sharpener (which requires that you mount it on a table by screwing it into the surface of your table) the Desert Song comes with a adjustable butterfly clip clamp that allows its attachment to your table (much more temporary) without having to damage the surface of your table. I feel that this is a better option if you do not have many younger children who may tend to try and remove the sharpeners as it will not damage any surfaces at its installation. However, if you require a more permanent attachment, the X-ACTO will be the better option.

Very sturdy unit.
Installation is very easy, simply Drill your top screw, level and lock it down with the bottom screw. There is a give and take in the manufacturing of this 2019 unit as compared to my 1970s pencil sharpener. My 1970s pencil sharpener is a heavy stamping with a Nylon catch and size selector. The Ranger 55 body is a light die casting and the collector and size selector are thin gauge stampings. However one huge improvement is that the handle is quality die casting as opposed to a stamping. Overall it feels good, looks good and sharpens colored lead pencils. Since there is no one here to abuse it, I believe the unit is going to give me decades of sharp pencils.

Sharpens All Pencils I've Thrown at it.
This thing sharpens all pencils I've tried. From the huge triangle handled colours to skinny Hb's. I sharpened all my kids pencils with it. Maybe a hundred or more in not very long. It takes a little while with the huge chonky pencils on the first use because it has to adjust the angle of the cut from what I had been using before. This makes quite a fine point. This thing needs to be secured to a surface with screws. I see this as a positive though because it's nice knowing where the sharpener is when I need one as well. Normally I can't find a sharpener because the kids have carried it off somewhere. The only real drawback is being unable to sharpen a pencil once it gets a bit short. Quite a bit goes into the sharpener itself, so if the pencil is a hands width long you will only have a tiny bit to try and hold while sharpening which results in the pencil just turning. I suppose you could use some pliars to hold the pencil but once I'm unable to hold the pencil while it turns I just bin the pencil. Overall I'm happy with it.

Excellent sharpener
This sharpener does not disappoint! I love how our pencil tips are not getting cracked off just as they are coming to a point (like our old one had been doing almost since the beginning), and how very few rotations of the crank are needed to get a nice sharp tip. We haven't yet mounted it as the kids like taking it with them wherever they are coloring, consequently our 6 year old finds it a little awkward to hold it still and crank the handle and keep her pencil in far enough, but our older children don't seem to be bothered by that at all.
