Anatomy of a Doll: The Fabric Sculptor's Handbook by Susanna Oroyan was just what I was looking for. Well laid out, clear and creative it will be a great learning and reference aid in my soft sculpture development. Which is not to infer it is only soft sculpture. This book also suggests ways to achieve results incorporating other tools, techniques and hobby items that will stretch the abilities. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said: "A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." Neither will old skills be as before limited.

This was one of the first books I read when I began dollmaking. Everything I did was guesswork until reading this as an ebook from the library. The minute I finished, I came here and ordered a hard copy so it would also be on hand. This tells you literally everything about how to construct a doll - from drafting body patterns to sculpting faces in various mediums, to all the ways to build moveable joints. Inspirational photographs and easy to understand instructions. It won’t give you projects on how to build a particular doll, but if you have an idea in your head, this book will guide you in turning your vision into reality. I am so grateful for having come across this.

I have loved this book since it came out. Great pictures, and very detailed instructions to make all different kinds of dolls. It was especially helpful with the construction and methods for armature. It is also an inspiring, colorful book, which made it a great gift for an artistic friend. Highly recommended!

If you are interested in making cloth dolls, this is the book. It covers cloth dolls with (obviously) cloth faces (and sculpting), clay faces, using felt and styrofoam balls....I have all of her books. Her doll books are soooo informational! I started with Robert McKinley (clay dolls) before discovering cloth dolls. There is so much to take in and this is a great book to start off with.

The author tackles a big problem in this book, its more than just cloth dolls. It is a history of doll making in general and doll sculpture in specific. There are web sites that do not handle the material nearly as well. I bought this book along with "Designing the Doll." While each book has some shortcomings the two together make a satisfying whole. in both the author is clear and specific. The author takes the reader through a brief history and then examples of several kinds of dolls from primitive effigy to complex sculptural creations that are breathtakingly beautiful. She addresses the basic construction styles of each of several kinds of dolls. This is an enjoyable thoroughly entertaining introduction to doll making in its various forms.

Explains the process of making dolls very well

I was looking for a book that gave a different view or instructions in doll making. And did I get it!!! I wasn't expecting the history of doll making, however, it strengthed my knowledge of cloth doll making. I love the details and resources this book provides. I am also ordering other books on doll making because of Susanna Oroyan. This is a great resource book and I recommend this to anyone interested in making dolls

The book arrived quickly and is just.plain.fun!!! Can't wait to dig in!!

Susanna Oroyan is indeed a master doll maker. Her 3 books Anatomy of a Doll, Designing the Doll and Finishing the Figure are a must have for the avid doll maker. Explicit and detailed instructions guide you through the most complex aspects of doll making. The photographs are worth the price of the books alone and will stimulate endless creative ideas.

This is a book for all doll makers with information on all of the different types of dolls and methods of construction.
