Is it hard to set it up in sand?

No, not at all, but as I learned from Florida natives, you need to buy one of those "screws" that you put it into and then screw down into the sand. Buy it before you go to Florida, as it is much cheaper on Amazon than to buy it in tourist areas. But it is not too expensive. If you don't do that, then when the wind picks up, it will lift it right out of the sand and then you have open, pointy umbrellas flying all over. The screw gives it resistance.

Is it waterproof? Does it hold up well in the rain?

Doubtful it’s waterproof .The price is far to reasonable ,pay $75 possibly be water resistant , waterproof costs quite a lot !
