Is it awkward to carry with heavier condiments on one side and lighter (paper) plates and utensils on the other? Is weight evenly distributed?

We haven't tried it yet, but will be next week. I think if you distribute weight evenly it till be fine. There shouldn't be any shifting.

Is this dishwasher safe?

Just because of the wooden handle, I wouldn't wash it in the dishwasher. However, if you disassemble it enough to remove the wooden handle, I wouldn't know any reason why you couldn't wash it in the dishwasher.

what size plate does this hold?

I was disappointed that regular 10" plates do not settle down all the way into the holder and it feels like they will fall out easily when carried or if windy. In order for them to touch the bottom and be held more firmly by the side bars, they would have to be only 8" plates. They 10" would be good if I keep it full...
