How do you use this exactly? do you put a stick in the center hole or just hold it? how do you cast?

Its limited to the ways you can think of using it for. Once you get your line set up with bait, what you do slide your fingers in the round holes around the perimeter of the inside, then you draw some line out about 3 feet or so, then you can toss it where you want it or swing it around a few times to get some distance and throw the line out where you want it at the same time aim your wheel facing where you want the line to go and it will unspool as needed. Use your fingers to get a good grip on the wheel and wind back up to reel in your catch. Can be used as like a metal yoyo fishing reel where you tie it to a branch spring loaded to set the hook for you, can be a back up if your fishing pole breaks, could be attached to a bow for bow fishing , although you would have to change out the line for something suitable , fashion an emergency reel if you have the know how. You can use it for camp early detection system by hanging some cans or noise makers. Extra way to fish if your buddy doesn't own fishing pole. Great item for bug out bag.

Does it stand up to salt water?

I’ve used it in salt water about 7 or 8 times and have experienced no corrosion or negative effects. I’ve used it in fresh water about twice that many times. But it still looks brand new and I’ve caught a ton of fish with it. Just my experience.
