Germany appreciates Broadway
Broadway stars Brent Barrett, Audra McDonald and Kim Criswell, and the magnificent opera baritone Thomas Hampson, sing in concert in Berlin one of Bernstein's most memorable and funniest shows. They are accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by the fabulous and unequaled Sir Simon Rattle. For a show-stopper encore, the entire orchestra, along with the stars, chorus and audience, all dance the Conga!

C'mon, it's a 3-and-a-half minute song
An enjoyable disc with a couple of caveats. The 5.1 audio settings make the audience sound like it's in a 5-gallon jug. And it was dispiriting and distracting to see Kim Criswell rely on a notebook for the lyrics to "Conga."

Great Entertainment
Great music from a terrific little Broadway musical back in the 1950's. Audra McDonald is a World class talent. The final number has the joint jumpin and those attending this concert rolling in the aisles.

I purchased this DVD based on Scott Morrison's review - and am very happy I did. It's great fun - a pleasure for the eyes and ears.

Rattle and the BPO on form
Rattle can get up my nose in a hurry with his Roger Plant hairdo, larger-than-life gestures, and that's before the British musical press start slavering all over him. However, his talent us unquestionable and as long as he resists the temptation to imprint his personality all over a piece, he can produce excellent work, as he does here. Of course, you can't overdo Lenny even with a head start. This is similar to the famous Barbican recording of On the Town with Tilson Thomas (long overdue to appear on dvd/blu ray), a concert performance with a mix of Broadway and classical soloists. That Barbican recording had the LSO and with Maurice Murphy on first trumpet you had no doubt the whole thing would swing gloriously, which it did. I was gratefully surprised to find the Berlin Phil aren't slouches either when it comes to letting their musical hair down. Even the Berlin audience can't sit still. It's New Year's Eve, after all.Wonderful Town isn't in the same league as On the Town, nor musically as Candide (though it makes at least as much sense). It's lots of fun, some memorable numbers, and this video does it justice.

An Wonderful Disc
