Works perfectly for years, and pairs nicely with Surveillance Station on Synology NAS
I know it is slightly more expensive than some competition. But saying that, it works really well. I have a Foscam R4 (the previous version using the same casing but slightly lower resolution and only WiFi 2.4GHz) and it has been working really well for 3 years and a half, permanently ON 24/7. The only thing I suspect a side of the night vision LEDs stopped working, or it is a setting... but it still works perfectly. The reason why I bought another Foscam R4 is because they work really REALLY well with Surveillance Station: that is an app that runs natively on the Synology NAS, and manages CCTVs brilliantly.I configured my router to stop any internet access to the webcams, so they cannot punch a hole out in the network even if they wanted to.Then, the Synology NAS is reading them in the local network. The Surveillance Station app is the one that I access to view the cameras and it manages all the recordings, with schedules for home and not at home statuses, and possibility of recording only when movement is detected. This is why the Foscam works great with this: the integration works 100%, so movement detection is done by the Foscam, and Surveillance Station knows when to record. Also the video quality etc is handled between the 2.Pairing the Synology NAS with the Foscam ip cameras works brilliantly, and I know the other R4 has a good reliability history, that for sure. This new R4M adds support for 5GHz WiFi and improves the details supporting up to 1440p resolution. I use them all at 1080p, but because this has higher specs, it still looks better if that makes sense. My conclusion: spending a few extra might be worth if you are looking to something that will last a few years and especially if you plan to couple it with Surveillance Station on a Synology NAS (I would DEFINITELY recommend this)

The R4 versus the R2 - What do you want the camera for?
It depends on what you want to use this camera for... Night vision is really good. In low ambient light levels you still get a really good colour image. Under daylight/domestic lighting the image is far too contrasted. Straight lines are jagged. It looks like they've tweaked the image just a bit too much. I have both the R4 H and the R2 models. The R4 image has a wide field of view, but is a bit fish eyed and is grainy in daylight. I also can't use it in HD or UHD modes using WiFi, (it's 5G). The R2 model has faithful colour reproduction in ambient light. Night vision is not so good, but adequate. I can also run the R2 in HD mode. (It's 2.4G) Wired connection on both is a little better. In conclusion, for good night vision it's the R4H, and for faithful and clear daytime vision it's the cheaper R2. Just to complicate things further, the R4H is compatible with Amazon Echo devices, whilst the R2 is not. You can view the feed from R4 on the Echo screen, as long as it's on the same network.

Another leap for Foscam
Having used Foscam products for years and found them to be more reliable and well built than others I have used, I have recently upgraded some of my older cameras to the latest product line from Foscam, I have found these to be a real leap ahead from the older models with well thought out and considered improvements. The R4M is one of the first cameras to feature dual band Wi-Fi and this is a real bonus if you have a busy 2.4 ghz network giving you faster connection on the 5ghz.The unit has the usual high quality finish that I have come to expect from Foscam and the new packaging is much nicer than the previous type.Set up is easy and I have it up and running in under a minute via the wireless method. The image quality is really good with the HDR able to deal with high contrast situations that other cameras would struggle, the lens has a very wide field of view with only a very slight fisheye effect. The night vision is excellent and sufficiently illuminates the whole room. The human detection seems to work very well virtually eliminating false alarms over standard movement detection also the sound detection is a bonus as you can use this to trigger recording before movement ie when an alarm sounds.Operation is very easy and the app clear and well laid out, a bonus is being able to pan and tilt via swiping the screen of your device rather than having to use a separate control.Having the option of recording directly to a SD card (you will need to purchase one) is a good option and also means you donβt need to pay for recording. In short a high quality camera in a neat compact package at a great priceI have put up a picture of it facing a bright window to show how good the contrast is and one with a iPhone SE to show how small it is
