An apprentice turning lathe operator, also known as a "Turner" would be handed one of these unique metal cubes and challenged with replicating one on the lathe. A normal cube would be no trouble for a novice machinist but a turner's cube presented a challenge. It is a metal cube that contains a free floating cube that is trapped inside. Accessible through openings on all six sides, yet unable to pass through any of them, the turner's cube requires a mastery of the lathe to machine. Today's machine tools are mostly controlled by software and CAM programmers. The era of the master machinist and apprentice is all but gone. However you can still hold a piece of this industrial age in your hand and marvel at how it might have been manufactured then and now. The inner cube is engraved and the outer cube edges are chamfered for safe handling. Material is 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum. External dimensions are precision machined to 1 x 1 x 1 inch.
