Eclipse Professional Tools EWWQR9 9" Quick Release Woodworking Vise, Gray

I purchased the 7 inch model. A good vice at an attractive price point. Even though I purchased the vice through Amazon warehouse deals, the item arrived in excellent condition. It had no visible damage, and all parts worked as they should. This affordable, but well-made and sufficiently heavy, woodworking vice even has a built-in bench dog, a very useful feature. By using the built-in bench dog with bench dogs in your workbench, you can tightly hold many different sizes of wood you are working on. The quick release feature is also a nice and useful feature, especially at this price. There are no mounting instructions, but I don't view this as a problem. The specific way to mount the vice will depend on the thickness of your workbench, whether you want to "flush mount" the vice, and where on the bench you seek to mount the vice. No single set of instructions could take these issues into account in a reasonable number of pages. Using common sense, planning ahead and analyzing your workbench will be rewarded. Mounting the vice can present unexpected challenges, but the end result is a very practical enhancement of a workbench (if you are only going to have 1 vice mounted to your bench permanently, this type is a good option). I attached the vice to the bench using four 1/2 inch lag screw bolts -- thankfully, the mounting hoIes in the vice are sufficiently large to accommodate 1/2 bolts. This permits a very strong and solid connection to the bench. I chose maple wood as the vice jaw liner and, after breaking a few phillips screw heads, decided to use bolts to attach the wood jaw liner to the two jaws. I used two 1/4 lag screw bolts to attach the liner to the thicker of the jaws (these bolts also screwed directly into the bench), and I used 2 smaller hex bolts with nuts to attach the second piece of maple to the thinner "outside" vice jaw. This takes time, but is well worth the effort. The vice is well-engineered. On some poorly engineered vices, the holes in the bottom of the vice, which are used to mount to the bottom of your bench, are in line with the holes on the thicker of the vice jaws -- this means that the two bolts may run into each other and prevent proper installation. This vice thankfully does not have this problem. Overall, the vice is an excellent value!

This is a heavy duty well made vice. I bought the 7 inch which is adequate for nearly all my needs. I love the quick release and that it has a pop-up dog for use with the bench dog system on my assembly table. I did need to grind a bit (not much) on the back of the casting so it would set true and square when I mounted it to my bench as it's simply raw casting there and not machined in any way, probably helps keep the price down. Also took a bit of shimming the mounts where it bolts to the underside to keep the faces square to my bench, but I expect that most such vises would take a bit of careful fitting. Overall the casting and machining on this vise appear top-notch. I think it's a really good deal for a small or hobby wood shop. I used through carriage bolts countersunk and plugged flush on the top of my bench as I felt this stronger than just lag bolts from the bottom. It's a bit more work, but I feel worth the effort so it won't shift or loosen over the years due to normal humidity and stresses. This unit works like a charm.

Compared to other 9" vise, this one weighs a hefty 35 pounds, as evidenced by the thick (nearly 3/4") jaws and 1" diameter screw and guide bars. In comparison, other lower priced 9" vises weigh 10 or more pounds less and have much thinner guide bars and jaws. The screw turns very smoothly, as does the sliding action when the quick release mechanism is used. The jaws align nicely with the right amount of toe-in. The tommy bar has rounded ends and slides through the hole smoothly, but not so much smaller than the hole that it drops down abruptly. My only complaint is the amount of packing grease they put on the screw. Took me a long time to get it off. Instead of following the installation instructions, I used 3/8" hex bolt, which are easier to find than the 10mm bolts suggested. Because of the weight of the vise, I installed the vise with the benchtop on its side. which makes the entire process of marking the positions for the holes and drilling the holes easier. Overall, the best vise for the money.

I'm a professional woodworker and I bought this for my second workbench. I already have two 35 year old Wilton vises with quick release features that still work perfectly. As I understand it this is a reproduction of the old Record No. 52 vise. It arrived undamaged from Amazon, the exterior box could have used more padding but it's ok. The action is smooth and is generally of high quality fabrication. The fast release mechanism works easily and the guide rods move without much friction and no binding. Everything is heavy duty and it should last a lifetime. I knocked it down one star for the following deficiencies (from a woodworker's point of view): 1) The Lead Screw is pitted from chatter marks made during machining (see photo closeup). This is probably due to vibration during milling and also from using a dull cutting tool edge. Really dumb error on the machinist's part. 2) The Lead Screw is not of Acme Thread quality (see photo of small section of an Acme Thread) like my old Wilton vises, which are very slow to wear out. However, I think this screw will also last a long time as the pitting does not affect the screw smoothness of movement. 3) The movable end stop for your wood item being worked does not recess all the way into the moving face plate so that you cannot lay a board down flush on the bench top and over the vise. So I had to hacksaw it off flush, about 1/4 inch taken off. 4) The face plates are designed to protrude above the bench top about 2.0 inches so you have to put a thick spacer block between the underside of the bench and the top of the mount casting. My spacer was about 1.75 thick for the thickness of my top. I think this was designed by a metal worker not a woodworker where the piece being held never lays flush on the bench top. I looked at a lot of vises and most were wimpy or just cheap. I even rejected Wilton who have really downgraded their vises from when I bought several decades ago. The woodworking stores were the worst, selling cheap hobbyist stuff that will be very disappointing in a short year or two. They should be ashamed. Overall this is one of the best vises in this price range for the 10" size and will work fine in a heavy use woodshop bench environment. I have included several photos as it is hard to really see the vise in the sales ad photos.

I gave it 5 stars because it is a well-made vise… Fortunately, I have skilled people that helped me install it, as it does not come with instructions nor a mounting template… I used ½” diameter SS bolts… Other people commented that they seem to have received a used product, as their vise came with sawdust… So did mine… The main complaint is the packaging… It is difficult to understand that so little thought has been given to the quality of the cardboard box… A tool that weights more than thirty pounds and that it will be handled multiple times during shipping and transportation must be packaged in heavy gauge cardboard and well protected… It is really incredible that my 10” vise came undamaged…

If you're considering getting into woodworking, either with modern power tools or with traditional hand tools, a front vise for your workbench is a must. The Eclipse EWWQR10-NA is big enough to handle the largest stock, but has very responsive screw travel for more delicate gripping needs. I lined my jaws with half-inch birch plywood secured with some flat-head screws to add a bit of softness to the grip without losing much travel. The quick release feature works very well and will get you open or closed against your work piece in a snap. You may notice a bit of slop when cinching the jaws up on a workpiece, but this is due to how the release mechanism bites the screw again upon release of the trigger. A simple fractional-turn of the screw and you'll be snug against your workpiece again with little-to-no effort. This is a large 10" model and might be overkill for the hobbyist or enthusiast. I bought this big-bore vise because I plan to build furniture and some of my oak stock is 8/4 thick and pieces can weigh over 50 lbs. I wanted to ensure I had enough jaw width to grab longer-thicker stock and still hold strong while I plane the edges by hand. I've been using the vise now for a couple weeks and I absolutely love it for furniture making. It holds the workpiece in place through even the most rigorous planing. The built in dog feature is nice, but it doesn't sit flush with the top surface of the jaw. If this is an issue for you, I suggest you take a chop saw or a bench grinder to the dog prior to use--just mark off the portion you wish to cut away and have at it. Also, you may think the thumbscrew and washer are missing from the box--check the plastic wrap that the vise was encased in and you'll find them secured inside near one of the corners--I missed them at first and contacted their service department (who got back to me a few days after I left a voice mail)--I ended up finding them prior to them getting back to me, but it was nice to know they actually listen and respond to messages! If you don't have a workbench with bench dog holes (like me), no need to worry. I just attached 1" x .5" strip of scrap oak I had at the opposing side of the vise so I can pinch work pieces between the vise's dog and the oak cleat to hold workpieces for face planing. This method works pretty well--just make sure you're screwing the cleat into enough material to ensure a firm hold as the vise can generate a lot of pressure with very little effort. Mounting the vise was also pretty easy despite having to retrofit my bench a bit (lack of foresight on my own behalf). It mounts pretty easily to the bottom of a work surface using some 1/2" lag bolts (length of bolt determined by your table thickness). Once it's in place--you'll be ready for nearly anything. Enjoy!

This Eclipse vise is a beast. The cast iron construction feels incredibly solid and the jaws grip with a force that's hard to match. I've used it for everything from delicate woodworking to heavy-duty metalworking, and it hasn't let me down yet. The quick-release mechanism is a real time-saver, and the overall design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. If you're looking for a vise that can handle anything you throw at it, this is the one.

After much thought about what size I should get I ended up purchasing the seven inch model and am glad I did. I installed two ten inch oak face boards on the jaws and it has tackled any job I've thrown at it. For the usual woodworking chores that a vise like this could be used for it's been stellar. All the machined areas are well done and work smoothly, the quick release is simple and easy to use and although the tommy bar is rather small it had enough clamping power to hold a solid core door by one corner for me. Installation was straight forward and the only modification I made other than adding wooden faces is I replaced the provided steel dog with a wooden one to reduce marring on work. It's used nearly daily and coupled with some bench dogs has held a wide array of work for planing, sanding, finishing, etc and never skipped a beat. I almost purchased one of those multi hundred dollar vises but you know what, I won't be needing it. This one has worked perfectly over a wide variety of uses without a single complaint and I highly recommend it.

Works amazing; great price. I would recommend that you clean the threads out as there are a lot of metal filings. You can do this by taking off the quick release mechanism at the end of the vice (two bolts) and then freely spin the threads and use a cloth to clean it off. I also placed a file in the threads to clean up the burrs. I also made the dog a little shorter by cutting a bit off with a hack saw and filing it smooth so it will not interfere with planes and such. This is the top rated vice (for the price) by Paul Sellers.

I’ve been using this vice for just a little over a year… usage of once in two weeks. The spring of the quick release mechanism broke, making the thing useless. I tried to contact spear jackson/eclipse if replacement part is available. No reply till now.

Ich habe diesen Schraubstock an meiner Werkbank montiert und bisher gibt es absolut keine Probleme. Der erste Eindruck ist sehr gut, das Material wirkt hochwertig und massiv. Die Mechanik läuft sauber und lässt sich gut bedienen. Natürlich muss man abwarten, wie er sich nach längerer Zeit im Dauereinsatz schlägt, aber aktuell macht er einen sehr stabilen Eindruck. Für den Preis bekommt man hier ein ordentliches Werkzeug, das einen zuverlässigen Job macht. Kann ich bis jetzt nur weiterempfehlen!

es un tornillo de banco de carpintero bastante decente y no excesibamente caro. tiene apertura y cierre rapido, que en principio creia que no seria muy importante, pero me he dado cuenta de que es extremadamente util. tiene una apertura y un ancho de mordaza mas que adecuados y sujeta las piezas con firmeza. de ponerle una pega, es que la parte trasera que monta hacia la mesa no es vertical, pero no influye (a escepcion de a la hora de montarlo, lo que no es problematico)

De klemplaten sluiten niet goed tegen elkaar aan. De winkelhaak geeft het probleem aan. Het is helemaal niet haaks gelast waardoor er een kier ontstaat tussen de 2 platen. Zet dan a.u.b. bij de beschrijving dat de platen niet goed aansluiten, dan weet je tenminste wat je koopt. Bij sommige bankschroeven verdwijnt de kier bij het aandraaien, bij dit merk helaas niet. Dus geen goed product!
