My first hand lens so didn't know what to expect, but this thing is very cool and a great asset for learning geology. I've been collecting rocks for a while and now can look at the super fine detail on them, can easily see the crystals and individual grains of sand for example. The light is essential and works well. I'm only using the larger lens, the smaller one is a bit distorted and doesn't seam to really show much more. The optics are good and sharp once you get the technique, which is to go in very close; fine-tuning the distance for focus; putting your eye as close in as possible for best view. The depth of field is very shallow; so its very arty and looks cool to peer into tiny little caverns in the rocks and see crystals and grains of sand sitting in there, and has the blurry background/foreground effect to contrast the sharp focus, this also means you want flat surfaces for a uniform focus. Also couldn't help discovering my finger nails; and finger print lines; lots of magnification; can see tiny hairs and all kindsa microscopic stuff! Great fun :) .. I had considered the versions saying 'triplet' and glass optics etc, but with a few weeks experience I think this one is just fine.

It does the job but everything about it feels cheap, from the case having a slightly off fit, to the LEDs, which while bright have iffy connections. For £5 it's fine.
