Q: Are the keys unique per diary? That is, if I bought 2, 1 for each of my kids, will they be able to unlock each other's diaries?

Nope the keys are the same for all of them.

Q: Do you create a code, or does it come with one? And how does it operate\work?

This is a simple diary with "vault" artwork on the front. It is not electronic. As you can see in the picture, it comes with a lock and key to close it.

the safe is just a drawing. it comes with a lock & 2 keys. they are thin, not heavy/good quality. my 8 year old was very happy with it though
