I have just unpacked and assembled - what is the purpose of the additional black cable and clip that plugs into the rear ?

On top of the 3-Prong UK plug that connects the station to the ground, this ESD-safe grounding wire can help reduce unnecessary static electricity from the station itself. Does this soldering station have an auto-sleep function

Yes, it says in the about this item section. “Sleep mode”

does this have a cooling function when you insert the iron into the holder?? or is there only a sleep function

No it doesn’t. To be honest I found this iron to have poor heat latency on larger joints so I bought myself a Weller Soldering Iron which is much better.

Is the included solder flux core?

Since the removal of lead from solder, the reel of solder included are not core fluxed. In the UK at least I've not found any lead free solder with flux included. I have had to use seperate flux to use the included solder with some pieces.
