My little Havanese doesn't know she is getting dental care when she get these, she just thinks she got a yummy and fresh treat. I have bought these for a while and they are great. Giving 4 stars because i think my dogs would LOVE these but i saw "small and toy" and ordered. Then i read the fine print and it says "not for dogs under 7 lbs" which mine are (i have chihuahuas, and my understanding is by definition toy breeds are generally/often under 7 lbs). I have used kitchen scissors and cut these into tiny pieces so they can at least enjoy them as a treat but it sort of defeats the original purpose--to use as a dental chew. I "think" i can get my dogs to chew them and not swallow too large a piece to potentially cause an obstruction, but until i'm certain how they will eat these, I will cut them smaller.

My dog is now 4 years old and we have been giving her one of these every day as a special treat after her nightly walk. Her teeth are still white, no signs of discoloration or decay. Her breath could be better, but as long as I don't have to pay for a vet to do a cleaning I am VERY happy. She LOVES them - salivates like Pavlov's dog whenever I take one out for her.

My little old dog is very picky when it comes to anything meant to clean his teeth. He hates all of the fake meat-flavored bone alternatives and toothpastes, but he loves the mint flavored Dentastix. I wish I’d found them sooner! He does have to work at eating them since he’s had several teeth pulled over the years, but he actually chews them rather than trying to swallow them whole like the green treats by another brand. Size & chew: I compared nutrition labels before buying, and these Dentastix have the highest moisture content of all the green treats I could find, which makes them a little easier to bite into than others even though they appear larger. I think the X shape, while unwieldy, also helps since he’s not having to bite through a half inch of solid treat. Effectiveness: Nothing will really help my dog’s breath at this point, because the vet wasn’t able to pull a large tooth that’s rotting in back. I will say that these treats don’t have that nasty fake meat smell, just a mild minty scent, and I think that they help clean his remaining teeth since he actually chews them. Longevity: I was worried that these might get stale since I was buying such a large quantity, but there doesn’t seem to be any decline in quality over time from what I can detect of the scent and texture. I do my best to minimize exposure to air, light, and temperature changes to keep them fresh. I prefer to break each sheet into individual sticks before storing as many as I can in a ceramic jar with a rubber gasket for quick, easy access. (You can see my dog checking out his treat jar in the pic.) I also squeeze any extra air out of the bag with the remaining treats before closing the built-in zip seal and putting it in the pantry. Maybe I’m being overly cautious, but my dog only gets one a day, and he was just as enthusiastic to eat it on day 102 as he was on day 1. I call that a win!
