Freeze Dried Breakfast Turkey Sausage | Backpacking & Camping Food | Gluten-Free | Emergency Foods

So I like grits and sausage for breakfast when I go backpacking. I found this product and thought I would give it a try. I was just using textured veg protein 'sausage' crumbles before this. **I use regular grits, NOT 'quick cooking'. Yes, I grew up in the 'south' in the US. Yes, I carry extra fuel for this purpose, and will die on the slow-cooking-grits hill if need be. It doesn't take that much longer to cook.Anyway!I first tried placing several of the whole sausage links in my grits and cooking all together. Nope. Sausage was soft on outside, but still dry and crunchy/super chewy.Next I tried placing whole sausages in the water for my grits, boil for a few minutes, then adding grits to cook. Little better, but still super chewy.I got the best results when I chopped the sausages up into bits at home, added them to my dry grits and then boiled all in the backcountry until grits were done.These are tasty and salty when chopped up and done right. So go easy on adding salt if your recipe calls for it. I enjoyed them quite a bit when I figured out how to get them to rehydrate properly. Cheers!

I bought these with high hopes of enjoying some on my next backpacking trip. Says to put in cold water for a few minutes to re-hydrate. That does not work. Still hard as a rock. They seem to taste good though. wish I could get them re-hydrated properly. Disappointed.

Has the texture of precooked, no skin sausage. Let soak a little longer then stated, cook and enjoy.
