Great for making food safe Plaster of Paris chew toys for parrots, etc.!
Gypsum is the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate. Plaster of Paris has 0.5 H2O per CaSO4 molecule. Heat this food safe gypsum in your oven at 300-350 degrees F for 1-2 hours and you can make your own food safe Plaster of Paris! Don’t overheat to higher temperatures (e.g. 400-500 degrees) - this will turn the whole thing into the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate which is insoluble in water and will be useless. I usually mix in some Calcium Carbonate powder to soften the Plaster of Paris - it can be quite hard - depends on how hard your bird or whatever can bite down. A half and half mix of the baked Plaster of Paris and Calcium Carbonate works fine for our double yellow head Amazon. Add water and stir to get a thick batter like consistency, pour into a silicone baking mold (small cupcake size works great) stick a piece of thick natural twine into each cupcake, add nuts and seeds into the mix. The plaster mix sets quickly so you need to have everything ready to stick into the mold with your plaster mix. One time, instead of water, I used grape juice instead - this massively slowed down the setting process. Dunno, it was probably the sugar in the juice, but you might want to experiment with smaller amounts of fruit juice which will probably only slightly slow down the setting process So why do all this? Plaster of Paris from hardware stores is NOT food safe quality and often have acrylic additives to make them stronger plasters for their intended use as a construction material. All these chew toys for birds on the market, especially the ones with calcium blocks - do you know what’s in there? I don’t, and many are made in China. ‘Nuff said

bags are not durable
nice powdered format, packaging needs a re-design. large amount of contents spilling out upon arrival, and had to be placed in a more durable bag

Good loose soil
Easy to use to loosen soil. Veggies grew huge after use and soil easier to work
