Every enterprise application creates data, whether it consists of log messages, metrics, user activity, or outgoing messages. Moving all this data is just as important as the data itself. With this updated edition, application architects, developers, and production engineers new to the Kafka streaming platform will learn how to handle data in motion. Additional chapters cover Kafka's AdminClient API, transactions, new security features, and tooling changes. Engineers from Confluent and LinkedIn responsible for developing Kafka explain how to deploy production Kafka clusters, write reliable event-driven microservices, and build scalable stream processing applications with this platform. Through detailed examples, you'll learn Kafka's design principles, reliability guarantees, key APIs, and architecture details, including the replication protocol, the controller, and the storage layer. You'll examine: Best practices for deploying and configuring Kafka Kafka producers and consumers for writing and reading messages Patterns and use-case requirements to ensure reliable data delivery Best practices for building data pipelines and applications with Kafka How to perform monitoring, tuning, and maintenance tasks with Kafka in production The most critical metrics among Kafka's operational measurements Kafka's delivery capabilities for stream processing systems Review: As good as it gets - As good as it gets Review: Comprehensive book; for developers (Java) and infrastructure engineers - This book provides everything you need, even as a beginner, to set up a Kafka cluster, produce messages, and consume messages. It mentions other topics which you will need to research on your own, like a schema registry. Highly recommend it.

Comprehensive, but more like a reference
If you want to know every single detail on how to set up and use Kafka, this is the book for you. It covers security, resource management, use cases with all possible configurations, etc. If you just want to know the concepts on how to use Kafka (without knowing security and setup), this is still the book for you, as it will expose you to the features and pitfalls. Later you can use stack overflow to find specific answers. I found the explanation on partitions and exactly once guarantee especially helpful. I found my eyes glazing over the exhaustive detail. High level concepts were explained in a just ok way. As a data engineer, I found the section on ETL especially weak to the point of being useless. You are better consulting other sources to learn how to integrate Kafka. Overall, a good book to go through before diving into Kafka.

Outdated needs a new Edition, print copy readability issues!
Already outdated. Second edition covers v2.8.x, 3.8.3 is current. Zookeeper is End of Life and will be completely replaced with Kraft in v4.0.0. Book has no coverage of Kafka REST Proxies, and other new features! Hoping that the third edition will be released soon with updated content. The print quality also has readability issues.

Exactly what I was looking for
This is what I expect from a book about a tool. To explain its concepts, design assumptions and important key points to have in mind when designing applications that use the tool. Discussions and explanations in deeper level than usually found over Internet (it's true you may find relevant discussions an articles on Internet, but not compiled and organized like in the form of a well produced book). Therefore, I do not expect a book like this to have a great amount of code examples. The code examples this book has are didactic, and illustrate the points and ideas being discussed. I only missed a deeper discussion regarding possible patterns for consumer retries without blocking the topic. Some are mentioned but at a high level.
