There's NO COATING (inside or out), it's just polished on the outside. As I said in my review, I'm not a metallurgist or a metals expert, was a trained mechanical draughtsman and later classed as an engineer. When working for Rolls Royce Aero Engines at Moor Lane, Derby, a top 'materials engineer' told me that there's no such thing as 'stainless steel', all WILL STAIN, to varying degrees. I say that there's NOTHING but stainless steel in this coffee pot or it's fittings. I bought it to avoid aluminium. I'm very pleased with it. Mine has a polished base water container, not the black one

If, by groove you mean a narrow channel around the perimeter, then yes. Quite a deep one.
