Q: I want to band perimeter of 3/4” thick shelf. Is it better to order slightly wider (like 7/8) then trim in case wood isn’t uniform? Or order 3/4? Thx.

I always like having a little wider. That way if while I'm gluing it I don't get it perfect I can come back and trim and to your point if the wood isn't perfect then you either are a touch short or over. So I like it just a little over.

Q: Can I put a clear urethane on edging?

Not only is the edge banding stainable, but it also accepts polyurethane as well.
