My 10-year-old daughter read this book in a couple of days and really loved it. You don’t need to know anything about D&D to enjoy this story, which is about a group of misfits at a school for monsters, who don’t really fit in because they’re not monstrous enough. It’s silly, with a lot of heart, and has tons of really nice illustrations. As a life-long player of D&D, it’s great to see them engage a younger audience.

...and Owlbears and Kobolds. Walker integrates quite a lot of the Forgotten Realms mythos into this story without it feeling like she was ticking off a list. All of the characters felt natural and engaging.Auther Walker manages to smoothly bring D&D into the 21st Century: positive and unobtrusive portrayals of alternative parents (charming pair of maternal female Minotaurs) and all manner of dungeon races that fit the light tone of the book without sacrificing their (respective) Orc-ness or Gnoll-ness. The story--while having a dark (lightly dark? Is that a thing?) MacGuffin that is resolved with virtually no blood (in a believable way) and yet with cost.Artist Tim Probert's art is absolutely perfect for this book: accurate portrayals of dungeon critters that are also personable and entertaining (not gory or scary).Honestly, I did not have high hopes for this book...but it had Gnolls so I thought, "Why not?" I was quickly drawn into this children's book for the writing and characters. Wish I was five or six years old having it read to me: this would have definitely hooked me on books. Very nice job!The description says, "Middle School", but this would be a wonderful book for much younger kids (as young as any who likes hearing stories read to them).

My 10 year old daughter loved this book. She is a huge fan of the Potterverse and The Warriors series. I got this book to see if she might like it (and to get her into d&d). After some reluctance, she read the book and wants to know when the next book will be released.

Really hoping to see more in this series. Just finished it in a few days. It was light and fun with silly characters that I hope we learn more about in the future.

This book was delightful. It's perfect for those familiar with the world of D&D style monsters or those just dipping their toes into the world of fantasy. Clever, insightful and thoroughly touching at times this book makes you feel like you're on the quest with the main characters. A perfect, poignant coming of age story, this book is even a fun read for adults. I can't wait until my daughter is just a bit older (she's 4 right now) and has the attention span to be able to read it with her. Though I'm familiar with the world of D&D I've only been a player for about a year, though my husband has been playing it for nearly 20 years. We read it together and both thoroughly enjoyed it equally.

I bought this for my daughter and we have been reading this at night for bed time. She loves it (so do i), Go Zelli.

It was so great to find a book that had a female lead, revolved around D&D, and kept my daughter reading until the end! She couldn't wait to tell us all about the book. We are looking forward to another one coming out.

Eins vorweg: ich war etwas hin und her gerissen ob dieses Buch drei oder zwei Sterne verdient, tendierte aber letztendlich zum Letzteren mit Blick auf die angesprochene Zielgruppe. So schön die Illustrationen und Geschichte auch ist - das Gesamtwerk passt schlicht nicht. Aber dazu in ein paar Worten mehr ~Die Geschichte ist liebevoll wie unspannend hunderte Male zuvor erzählt, über Zelli, ein Mädchen welches sich als Mensch in einer Akademie voller Monster fehl am Platz fühlt. Die Geschichte um eine Außenseiterin welche mittels ungewöhnlichen Freunden zu besonderer Größe kommt wird mittels schönen Bilder illustriert, so dass man den Eindruck bekommt es handelt sich um eine für Kinder gerechte Geschichte.So mag es auch wirken, wäre da nicht die Sache um Dungeons & Dragons ~Schnell wird beim Lesen klar, ohne Vorkenntnisse über Monster, Feinde und Abenteurern und was diese Monster so besonders und witzig macht in ihren dargestellten Positionen (als Dekan hält ein Beholder her, ein Professor ist ein untoter Demilich, z.B.) kommt kaum bis keine Freude auf beim Lesen. Nur Konfusion und Verwunderung. Es ist nicht nur mühsam, sondern meines Erachtens ganz unmöglich als Nicht-Kennerin von Dungeons & Dragons sich einen ordentlichen Reim über die Situation an der Akademie zu machen. Ganz anders für jene, die sofort wissen was z.B. ein Owlbear oder ein Mimic ausmacht.Die größte Enttäuschung für mich war die Länge des Buches. Für 8,80 EUR am Erscheinungstag konnten die schönen Illustrationen nicht darüber hinweg täuschen, dass mit kaum einer Stunde Lesezeit alles schon wieder vorbei ist.Die Geschichte macht Lust auf mehr, und verspricht spannende Folgebücher. Aber alles in allem ist das Format hier nicht stimmig. Hier hätte ich mir eine "vollständigere" Geschichte gewünscht. So wie es jetzt ist, fühlt es sich für mich so an, als hätte ich ein Kino-Ticket für einen langen Trailer bezahlt, statt den ganzen Film zu bekommen.Abschließend mag ich sagen: dadurch dass man Vorkenntnisse über die Monster benötigt um einen essentiellen Part des Buches genießen zu können, kann ich dieses Buch nicht empfehlen. Es beginnt vielversprechend, verfehlt jedoch im Gänze. Nicht wirklich geeignet für Kinder. Nicht genug für junge Erwachsene (und Erwachsene). Viel zu wenig für Kenner und Liebhaber von Dungeons & Dragons.
