No they are not thin,it's a padded glove that's firm to help support your grip for the bar or dumb bells etc.

The strap is about 18 inches. It wraps around the wrist very securely and gives a lot of support.

Is it normal for these gloves to rip in less than a year

Here to reorder a new pair and Amazon is showing me my first was four years back - less four months. Original pair has gone through hundreds of very heavy weightlifting and is still going strong, but the wrist wrap is now 'wrinkly' that i feel I no longer get firm support around the wrist especially when bench-pressing. Pull tab and loop for removing gloves never gave either. Sturdy, and durable product. Highly recommended.
