I’ve been using the BAOFENG UV‑9G GMRS Radio for a while now, and it has impressed me on every front. Edit: Contacted Baofeng customer support, they were friendly and helpful, but did advise that since i purchased through a reseller (not through Baofeng's Amazon store) the fastest route to replacement was through Amazon. I ordered a replacement and it works perfectly. I'm returning the dud today. Upgraded to 4 stars because its still more of a pain than getting a working radio on the first try, but I'm happy with the radio so far. Original review: "You get what you pay for" It was between a UV-9G and a KD-935G (which costs 5-6 times more) so I opted to get a UV-9G. Bonus: it's advertised to be more water resistant than many other radios. Cool. The UV-9G arrived today. I used CHIRP to backup the configuration before I changed anything. I then went through a series of tests that can only conclude I received a dud. First test, I tried to talk with my son while he was using one of the Midlands (GXt1000G...another radio I do not recommend, but that's because it's an FRS/non-licensed model, which limits power and other options). Didn't get anything between the Midland and the Baofeng, so I figured the Midlands had been in storage for a long time, should break them all out and test them. When all of the Midlands worked flawlessly, I decided to double check CTCSS/DCS settings. All of them (Midlands + the Baofeng) were set to "OFF" for CTCSS/DCS, so perhaps the channel mapping got mixed up. I double checked that, ended up wiping the original config and putting a single channel in on the Baofeng to test, still nothing. Then I decided to hook up an SDR and test while transmitting on the Midlands (all spiked the waterfall immediately) and the Baofeng (nothing. No spikes no pattern, nothing). Well, maybe the transmit function is broken, but perhaps it can still pick up NOAA in my local area, right? Midlands all picked up as expected, and unsurprisingly the Beofeng did, well, nothing again. Maybe it's a bad antenna? Nope. Used this antenna on an SDR and was able to pick up the Midlands just fine. I reached out to Baofeng inquiring about a replacement, so if by some lucky chance they're able to get a working radio to me, I'll revise this review.

I wanted a couple of relatively inexpensive and rugged GMRS radios to use on Jeep trail rides. I chose the Baofeng UV-9G based on information I found from other sources on the internet. Baofeng is a Chinese company with a reputation for being cheap, but I figured these would get me started and I could upgrade later if necessary. I was surprised to find the UV-9G to be a well-built, sturdy feeling radio. It is IP67 rated, so it should survive anything I can expect to encounter "in the field". Speaker sound quality is good, at least to my ear, and it is loud enough to be heard over a rumbling Jeep on a trail. The belt clip is annoyingly large and makes the radio uncomfortable to hold in the hand when it is attached. But it has a quick-release mount on the radio, so you can leave the belt clip on your belt and slide the radio out as needed. It allows the radio to swing freely on your belt which I like. My kit included two radios and two antennas for each radio. The longer antenna is impractical for belt carry or inside a vehicle, but the performance is good. I was able to reach a repeater 53 miles away from my back yard with the longer antenna. The shorter antenna is more than adequate for short-range comms, Jeep to Jeep for example, and more convenient to carry and use. The UV-9G operates on all GMRS channels, including the ones that overlap FRS channels. It transmits at 5 watts (5W) on channels 1-7 and 15-22, and 0.5W on channels 8-14 which are the FRS channels. It also transmits at 5W on the repeater channels. The base GMRS channels and eight repeater channels are pre-programmed. You can add "DIY" channels above those. I have pre-programmed mine with all of the local repeaters, including any CTCSS tones needed to access them. I used the CHIRP software instead of Baofeng's software. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's easier than trying to program memory slots from the radio buttons. Shortcomings: It would be nice if channel names could be longer, and a USB port for charging on the battery would be my top two changes. Neither of those is worth removing a star. If you want a low-cost and very functional GMRS handheld radio look no further. And if you get these radios (or any GMRS radio), get the GMRS license from the FCC as well.

I bought two of these five years ago (2021) when they were new on the market. I have used them both countless times on Jeep trail rides and they have been excellent with good reception in the Utah mountains even on large group events where trail leads were quite a good distance away. The battery life is great and doesn’t seem to drain very much when sitting on a shelf not in use. I have switched to a mobile unit in the Jeep but take these along as loaners or for spotting.

I bought the GMRS radio to get into the radio hobby. I paid for my license, and have actually used this radio to join a weekly "net" in the next city through the use of repeaters. Overall, radio is very sturdy and pretty easy to use. On occasion I'll loan out a radio or two to keep in touch with family members at certain locations (they are covered by my license.)

I picked up this radio after doing weeks of research and watching NotARubicons review video. So I picked one up, thinking this is the best GMRS radio for the price. But at the end of the day it's still just a $40 radio and you get what you paid for. So what's wrong? First the FM radio function doesn't work, they did start putting up notices that due to chip shortage they would remove the function. I would prefer they temporarily stop selling the product until they get more chips. Why would they think we would want to buy a product that doesn't actually do what it's supposed to do? The second important function that I wanted was Tone Scan as we were planning to use this radio with other radios we already have, so I would need to figure out the tones of all the radios. Even though the function is stated in the manual and NotARubicon said it had the function too. It also does not work. I spoke to Baofang directly and they're not sure why it doesn't work and advised a return. And lastly, I question its waterproof ability. As seen in the picture, there is a rather substantial gap between the mic input cover and the radio, on the top also, so if it rains the water will go directly in it. So I'm not sure how it's rated at IP67 when IP67 products don't usually have gaps around entry points. And the side ability to be used as a scanner was also disappointing, as I was able to get more broadcasts from my phone scanner app than with the actual radio. As just a radio it would be ok, if it actually did everything it was advertised to do. Either wait for them fix all the issues or go with another brand that works as advertised. But don't waste your money on it now as you will only return it.

These are essentially the regular Baofeng radio in a waterproof shell. I use these for kayaking and even brought them to Alaska as our shore/emergency radios on a boat trip. Very reliable, good battery life, no complaints.
