Légère Reeds - Bass Clarinet Reed, Signature, Strength 2.50 (BCS2.50) - Premium Synthetic Woodwind Reed

My bass clarinetist husband is delighted with this Legere synthetic bass clarinet reed, at the 2.50 strength. He is so delighted that he can just pick up his instrument and play! No reed sucking needed. The tone and control are excellent. He highly recommends this reed, and wonders why it took him so long to buy one for himself. 5 Stars! The seller that we purchased it from was a bit slow in sending, but this is a review of the reed only.

I have used synthetic reeds on my Selmer Bass Clarinet for years. Generally I used Fibrecell and they are fine quality. All synthetics are a little different, just like a cane reed, and you need to find one that fits. So, I decided to switch to the NEW Signature series. It responds like cane, is a little less vibrant than the Fibrecell and BARI. It works great on my Charles Bay. NOTE: these reeds run hard for me and I ordered a 2 (normally play a 3 or MH) and it was fine. Other variations of Legere have NOT worked for me but the SIGNATURE is a different animal.

After using cane reeds for clarinet and bass clarinet for 30 years, I am now using Legere reeds 85% of the time, and 100% of the time for bass clarinet. Cane reeds still sound better on soprano clarinet, but Legere has the advantage of playing without moistening and longevity.

I have tried legere reeds for both Bb soprano and bass over the years and have been impressed, but not totally happy with the sound quality. These signature versions are much better, particularly for bass clarinet. I give only 4 stars for sound quality since there are still some issues there, but I have switched from cane on my bass for sure. I like the playability and consistency. The 2.5 size works well and seems to be equivalent to a cane 3.0-3.5.

I was really looking forward to trying a synthetic reed for the first time. I was disappointed. I tried right away and it was fine- not great, not bad. But the third day of playing- right in the middle of band rehearsal, it suddenly became unplayable. I wound up switching to an unbroken- in wooden reed which right away gave 10x better sound than the 30 something dollar reed you sold to me. I’m not sure if the reed you sold me was used, defective, or what. on closer inspection, it is not symmetrical so maybe defective but what am I supposed to do? I feel very cheated…

Reed was stuffy sounding. Legere will exchange, but seller will not.
