A really enjoyable book on the Zulu wars . A well balanced account of the whole campaign.Highly recommended

Very well written and informative book. It truly brings the reader to the times and provides keen insight to everything from the politics to the the tactics employed during this period. The included maps are of great benefit for those who are not familiar with the region (as I am not), and the descriptive text helps the reader to visualize the environment the British Army, Native Contingents, and the Zulus operated in.A good read for those with an interest in the history of this region or for those who wish to learn more about this time period and the Zulu wars.

What a story!. Every page held your attention, This book -for me anyway- required my full attention. It is very intense and you could easily loose yourself with all that is going on. After this battle - the British certainly had to change their mindset regarding their opposites--ie: the Zulus. I had seen the movie of Zulu which introduced Michael Caine and I felt it helped me to get a lot more out of the book.

If, like me, you have an above average interest in military history, you may be considering this book.For sure it is well researched and thorough, but that thoroughness comes at a price for the casual reader. e.g. the many components of the Zulu army all have very similar sounding names, and I found it impossible to keep track of them during the early part of the book. I very nearly gave up.The maps (at least in the paperback edition I have) are not so great.In summary, it was a 3 1/2 star book for me. It's possible I would have been more satisfied with a less comprehensive account from another author.PS Wasn't so happy that rifle ammunition was referred to as "bullets". A professional account like this would work better with "ammunition" or "cartridges".
