How do these hold up in the dishwasher?

No problem in the top of the dishwasher!!!

Do the tips spread apart when squeezing tight?

No. These are really strong and work well.

What is the nature of the "rainbow" color? Is it paint? Will it peel off? Or is it a hard-finish that will be durable?

Tweezers tongs using the rainbow color electroplating process, normal use of color will not fall off, only with knives and other sharp or sandpaper scraping will wear plating coating, thank you!
