I have a 30 pound Mini Australian Shepherd and got the Knavigate X-Large.

Q: How is this airline friendly with the dogs head sticking out?

It would NOT meet airline standards for a carrying case while on board. I have traveled with my dog and regulations for Delta Airlines required her to be contained completely in a case where they can turn around. This would not allow for a dog to be enclosed within.
