Will these hold large cowhide rugs?

Probably. We have 8’ x12’ thick shag pile rugs hanging off a 1903 built-in picture rail. The are pretty heavy, but we put a clip about every 14 inches or so. They will put a hole (or open the weave a bit ) in whatever you’re hanging, which is partly how they hold tight.
