Nice little Kamodo for a single guy for steaks, burgers chicken...
Didn't get mine here at the big A, got it at the big W web site, but this is a NICE small duty kamodo!! The craftsmanship was GOOD, fit and finish good for the price I paid, and fully functional. I fabricated a second grill grate and a method so under it I can slip in a 7" ceramic disc I cut to size --- to use when I wanted a ceramic heat diffuser beneath say a large chicken quarter, so the dripping fat didn't drop right into the fire and flame up and burn the chicken to a crackly black crunch. HA! Could also set a little Pyrex bowl under there too maybe to catch that much fat drippings?Do not need the ceramic diffuser for burgers, steaks so I just use the grate that came with it and it's a nice thick wire grate. The Weber Smoky Joe Jr. CHARCOAL grate is 10" but it's not stainless steel nor chrome plated, but it "almost" fits the top rim of this Woodeze as well as the factory grate, but not exactly. With the right grinding tool you could fix that.Putting it together alone was a little trouble but two people would be a breeze. I needed to adjust the band around the kamodo that holds the dome hinge, so that when closed the dome was perfectly flat on top of the bottom main Kamodo part for max seal tween the top and bottom. With two people that would be simple. Do NOT try to overtighten stresses on the ceramics. It IS ceramic. This little Kamodo does a NICE job, for what it's designed to do. PERFECT for small but tasty Kamodo jobs for a single guy, or a couple that are modest eaters. Draw a 10" circle on some paper to see if that's big enough for a given couple. Will hold two 10 oz NY Strips or one porterhouse. Maybe 3 good size burgers or so. 4 if not as big as I make em and I'm a big guy. Holds one 18 to 19 oz ish chicken quarter.I also have a 19" Kamodo for bigger jobs. The big thing with Kamodo's is starting it right to get your lump charcoal going correctly, AND to adjust your TWO vents correctly! Is a video or two on YouTube on Kamodo beginners mistakes to avoid. Watch them. Your little manual that comes with shows you 3 pics of a general starting point for your vent openings and I've found them to be good starting points.Mine arrived VERY well packed, intact, excellent thick and heavy cast iron lump charcoal bottom grate that will last forever. Use LUMP charcoal in these, not the usual charcoal briquettes. NEVER light coals and THEN dump them into any Kamodo as the thermal shock can crack the inner bowl. Light your coals IN the Kamodo.I always throw a fat handful of wood chunks or chips on the charcoal, too, right before I add the food and close the dome. NO need to soak them in water, in fact I prefer to not do that.Enjoy!NICE thing about any Kamodo, this one included. When you are done cooking, right quick before you head into the house with your grub, CLOSE BOTH VENTS. You will conserve quite a bit of your lump charcoal to shake out and add back into a fresh load of lump charcoal for the next cook job. W has a brand of lump charcoal, Cowboy Brand that is the best value and works fine and cost less than Royal Oak or Jealous Devil which is known as the best.I don't see a lot of difference in lump charcoal brands, but the JD doesn't seem to have quite as many small pieces, but dang, they're so close if you're on a budget like most of us, the Cowboy will serve you well.Get one of these if single, or a light eating couple and not intending on doing whole briskets or racks of ribs. You CAN do a whole chicken on this (again consider the heat diffuser, which you CAN buy online with the grate for $35 if you search for it. My 19" Kamodo is for the big jobs, but it uses more charcoal too.Grandpa always said, right tool for the right job. For small jobs, you will like this baby Kamodo. I sure do and have been cooking outside for 55 years. I almost never use my Traeger after getting my 19" Kamodo!!! It just produces superior results and I don't mind fussing with the temp control and baby sitting it some.
