Sterling silver acid etched scarab design on heavy 18 gauge silver featuring two 18k gold granulation ball details and a high grade natural Lone Mountain turquoise stone. I handmade this piece of jewelry from sheet silver and sheet gold. The process of Acid etching is very dangerous and the results don't always come out right. the process starts by designing the image that you want to etch, printing it out on toner transfer paper, then transferring that to the metal. After this, you mix the acid etching solution and carefully wait for the acid to eat away at the exposed part of the metal. If the acid solution is too strong it will take off the image you have printed and ruin the design. If the acid is too weak then it won't eat away enough of the exposed metal to make the impression. After I got this out of the acid bath I cleaned it off and sawed it out around edges. I tinned the back and soldered it to a plain silver sheet (20 gauge). I soldered the two gold detail granulation balls and the hand formed bezel to the back plate. I then sawed out the entire design around the edge. I drilled two holes for the jump rings and soldered the jump rings in place. I then textured the back plate, gave the entire piece an oxidation bath, and then carefully polished off the oxidation on the scarab where I wanted it shiny. This process of oxidation and polishing was extremely tedious and difficult on this piece! The last step in this process was to set the stone and add the chain. : ) *** The scarab is a symbol of eternity and creativity. It can help us choose a path when we come to a cross road in our life. *** Let this night flying scarab help you on your journey. ***** All items are shipped via USPS Priority.
