Casual Home Shelf Bookcase

Well-made shelf,attractive design, assembly moderately easy.,shipping timely . Very pleased with this item which looks great in the bathroom. The price unbelievably low! Would buy another if I had a place for it.

As others have noted, the "walnut" color leans hard toward the red end, while not quite making it to "cherry", but I wanted that. There are also, as noted, a lot of finger-joints in the otherwise-solid wood shelves, but those types of joints are very strong and you don't see them once there's stuff on the shelves, plus it's more environmentally responsible and economical to not have to use big spans of clear wood. The finish/gloss isn't super even on the shelves, but it's easy to pick a better side and arrange the main shelves to see the best parts. Assembly was pretty straightforward, although the holes on the top shelf weren't as easy to align as on the other shelves, but getting all of those screws started and then incrementally tightening around and around got it done. The screw cover pegs just needed a little persuasion with a hammer to go into the holes (but use something in between to protect the peg finish). Once assembled, with the very long screws, the shelf is both relatively light and very sturdy - we have bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar loaded on one shelf and lots of cookbooks on two others, and it's been fine for the few weeks we've had the shelf. My biggest concerns were a strong wood finish smell right out of the box that dissipated quickly, and lots of vaguely-concerning small sparkly fibers that got everywhere when unboxing and assembling, but a damp-rag wipedown and vacuum of the area seemed to address those. This is an attractive addition to my kitchen that I expect to serve well for many years. And, bonus, the open back allows me to still access a light switch on the wall we wanted to put the shelf on.

Perfect! Great size - beautiful - sturdy. My 13 year old put it together in 20 minutes. Exactly what I wanted!!

I purchased this shelf for my niece and she loves it. She has quite the library and needs the storage for the books. Assembly was easy with just me putting it together, it took about 45 minutes (it was a little awkward). It is a reasonably attractive shelf and is sturdy. The only flaw in the whole thing is the design for attaching it to the wall so it doesn't fall forward. They supply L brackets that attach to the shelf sides and to the wall the shelf is against. The problem is, the L bracket design does not take in to account any floor molding the shelf is also against at its base. The top of the shelf is not flush against the wall so the brackets will not work. They should include a screw and cable system that would allow for any gap between the wall and shelf. Otherwise, great shelf unit, especially for the cost.

I LOVE these bookshelves. They are made of real pine, as the description states - not particleboard, like so many of the other bookshelves you find for sale at this price point. (Bonus: My living room actually SMELLS like pine!) The espresso finish matches my other wooden furniture perfectly. The included instructions were easy to follow; I had no trouble assembling these myself. (One tip: Do be sure to pay attention to which side of the shelves are flat, and which are angled, so that you install them correctly. The angled side faces out). When I first put these together, I ignored the final step in the instructions, which says to use the included anchor and screws to bolt these bookshelves to a wall. After a couple of months, I noticed they were developing a list, leaning conspicuously to one side. I worried about them breaking, and so have bolted them to the wall as recommended. Problem solved! I purchased the five-shelf model; if you purchase one of the shorter models then perhaps you can forego anchoring your bookshelves to the wall. These tall pieces, though, really do need to be anchored for stability. Some other reviewers have complained about the finish on these bookshelves. I noticed a couple of small defects on mine, but they are either located on the underside of the shelves, or are covered up, once the shelves are loaded with books. Personally, I'm not going to get worked up over a couple of inconspicuous defects in the finish for otherwise durable bookshelves that cost less than $100 apiece. Overall, these are a great value - sturdy and beautiful. I am very happy with my purchase! A+++

I needed a small bookcase that I could use in the kitchen for cookbooks, and I wanted real wood, not particle board. I got the white painted version, to match the wainscoting and trim in my kitchen, and this review reflects my impressions of the white one only. This is solid wood, very sturdy-I was able to fill up the shelves and the top with thick, heavy cookbooks, and it didn't wobble or tip. (The kit comes with hardware to fasten it to the wall, but we don't have small children, so I opted not to bother.) This is very easy to assemble-it sounds as though some people had trouble with it, but I honestly don't know why-if you can put Ikea furniture together, you can do this. The first one I put together took about a half hour, the second maybe twenty minutes-seriously. There are directions with the kit, but really, just lay the pieces out on the floor and look at them-I promise this is not rocket science. You won't need the directions. Make sure you have a Philips head screwdriver, a rubber mallet to thump in the screw covers, and a pair of pliers to help turn the stupid L-wrench that comes with it (unless you have an octagonal screwdriver-that works too.) If you tighten the screws enough, the bookcase will be very steady, and you probably won't need to fasten it to the wall. It was a perfect fit in the kitchen's bay window, and I actually bought another one for the other side. Very good quality for the money, especially with Prime's free overnight shipping, a piece of cake to assemble, and I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I needed it.

I wrote another review saying it was wobbly, but I tightened all the scerws and it is not anymore - my bad. The top bar keeps everything firmly in place. Th top shelf is really a mantle, it does not screw in, which I would have preferred because I run into it and shift it a lot. The materials are good quality with a fine paint job, it really loks great after its all put together. It's a little hard to put together, but I don't do a lot of this stuff, it's like Ikea with the allen key. I felt I got my money's worth and it came in good shape and on time. I'm happy with the purchase.

I am so happy with this book case. It was so easy to assemble and it’s solid material makes it very sturdy. And considering I have a lot of hard cover books, this is a huge bonus. It’s also quite stylish too. Although I personally didn’t assemble it, I watched the person doing it and it was put together in less than 15 minutes. I believe that there is an option to anchor it to a wall for additional stability which I think is a great idea! This is a great lower budget option.

I've been shopping for a lot of furniture lately as we just moved, and this piece stands out as a really good price for the quality. It's solid wood, sturdy, pretty and was the perfect size for our space. I also thought the wood covers for the screws are a quality detail. If you don't like the wood grain showing faintly through the paint, just add another coat, but personally, I love it. We used it in our laundry room, but I'd gladly buy again for a bedroom, entryway, or living room.
