Does it do single colours as well or only gradient?

Yes, it does. I take it you have the 2 m and your adding this 1 m extension on? You will have to set the 3 bands onto one colour spectrum for the one colour. Its really easy to do using the hue app easy to do. Enjoy. Its brilliant.

Do you need to purchase a plug or does it come included?

This is only an extension for the initial kit which you need to purchase. These just attach to the original and don't need separate power

can i add this to the bottom of my tv, i already have the 55 inch hue play setup?
