This is the one...
If you're looking for an Atra razor, this is the nicest one out there right now that you can easily attain. The competition: * The current Gillette Vector: although inexpensive, it's mostly plastic and cheap (the parts that look metal are just chrome plated plastic). Apparently there is also a European version with the head made of metal, but you have to hunt around for it. * The Merkur Twin Blade Razor (with a plastic Atra adapter): while the handle is gorgeous, the plastic adapters that allow the carts to fit to the head have three problems: 1) they're plastic and will eventually break, 2) there's no button to pop off the head - you have to twist, push, and pull a bit to get the cart on and off. 3) it causes the whole cart to protrude from the head quite awkwardly. * A new or used original "vintage" Gillette Atra razor on ebay. They seem to go for between 20 and 40 bucks, depending on condition. And there aren't that many available at any one time. And then we have this little beauty. It's all metal (save for the black plastic push button), a really nice weight, and rock solid. I believe this should last many, many years. It feels great in hand, and the angle of the head is just right. I've tried this out with multiple carts, and they all fit perfectly: 1. Schick SlimTwin -- these are my favorite, they're slimmer than others, and have the nifty cleaning push-tab. No lube strip. 2. Merkur Twin Blades -- these fit *both* Atra and Trac II handles. Great razors, but pricey. Has a lube strip. 3. Personna Twin Pivot Plus - these also fit both Atra and Trac II. Has a lube strip. On the down side, it's a little bit pricey (but nowhere near what the Merkur costs), and it can be a bit slippery in the hand, depending how wet you get your hand while shaving. I may try some Sugru on the handle in the near future, I'll report back how that turns out. Oh - and the packaging is really cheap: a lightweight cardboard box, completely without markings, and no instructions. Not that you'll need any, and the box gets thrown away of course, but if you're giving this as a present, be aware that the box makes this look a bit cheapish. Overall though, this is a winner.

A good product that fills a need.
It is just what I was looking for... a way to use twin blades without having to buy the cheap plastic disposables. I didn't want to have to go to the 3 or more blades as they never shaved any better and cost so much more. I tried a double edged safety razor but always wound up with nicks. Twin blades disposable shaved me great, and this continues that. If you are tired of either using a cheap disposable or paying too much for more blades than you need, this fits the bill. It feels well made, the handle to cartridge fit is solid. The heft is good. Two drawbacks: First, yes it is slippery. Some practice has helped me control it better when shaving downwards but I still feel awkward when shaving upwards on the second pass. Being round there is no tactile feedback that tells you the razor isn't somewhat twisted instead of parallel to your face. Second, my razor had three rubber rings around the grooves near the bottom of the handle. Two of them were broken and fell off when I took it out of the plastic wrapping. Not a major problem, and I will contact the seller to see about getting two new ones. Bottom line is a good product that fills a need. Could be better, but there isn't anything out there that compares. Updated 12 January 2017: I contacted the seller and explained about the broken non-slip rings. Per their instructions I ordered another razor and returned the first one. The second one arrived perfect. Quick communications on their part as well. Second, I changed from canned shave cream to a shaving soap and brush. The end result is my hands are less slippery since the brush gets the soap on it rather than my hands. The razor doesn't slip anymore and the shave from the soap is even closer than before.

Satisfaction to Quick Disapointment
I was very impressed with this razor when I first got it, for all the money I spent it felt solid and seemed like a handle I would own for many years. BUT... as others have pointed out, the handle is extremely smooth, a bad idea for something one handles when wet. I tried wrapping some waterproof first aid tape around the handle, which took away from the looks, but helped a bit when handling the razor. Sadly, it only took about a month until the razor slipped from my hands and fell onto the carpet from about 4 feet up. Which is when I discovered the weak point of this handle - the connectors to the blade are very cheaply made, and one dislodged and refused to re-seat itself, so the blade kept popping off, making shaving a very frustrating process. After a couple of days I gave up on the handle and bought a cheap knockoff from India, which is what I wish I'd done in the first place. The designers really should have given this handle some kind of grip - looking back at all the razors I've owned, every manufacturer had some kind of groove or rubber covering to stop the user from slipping or dropping it. This handle is ultimately very poorly designed for what looked on the surface to be a real quality item. Instead I have to rate this as the most expensive and shortest lived handle I've ever had.

Looks GREAT!!!
I wrote a review last night concerning how much I loved being able to get my Atra Plus heads for a cheaper price on Amazon. And how I would be using them until I properly know how to shave & sharpen my straight razor. I ordered off for a 10 pack of Atra Plus disposable blades, along with the All Metal Heavyweight Chrome Atra Compatable Twin Blade Razor Handle from Super Safety Razors. I just received bothe the Atra Plus blades & the Razor handle today (suprisingly from UPS rather than regular mail. Not bad mind you.) The Atra Plus blades were fine. But the Atra Razor Compatatible Handle was suprisingly pleasant (Definately Suprising!). I had already shaved when it arrived, so I will use it tommorrow when I shave & give an update on my thoughts about it then. The 4 Star rating is due to the fact that I haven't used it yet but the other features definately rate it at least a 4 star rating. The first thing I noticed about the handle was the WEIGHT of it. It is definately living up to it's name, Heavyweight, in that department. I compared the weight of it to the old Atra Plus Razor handle that i have been using for the last few years. And there is a noticable difference between the two. The next thing I noticed was the look of it. It is a slightly different design compared to my old Atra Plus Handle. Nothing major but it does look nicer compared to my old Atra Plus razor Handle. The 3rd thing I noticed was the fact that it did not have a textured grip like my old Atra Handle. Guess I will have to see how that works when I use it tommorrow morning. The 4th thing I notced was that it was a bit longer than the old handle. Again, nothing major. The 5th thing I noticed was that it is made out of damn near solid metal construction, which accounted for the noticable weight of it & weight difference between the two blade handles. This is going to last me for a while. And is going to be VERY durable! Definately a plus!! And lastly the 6th thing I notced. It is a little different in how you put the disposable razor heads on. My old Atara plus you just depressed the button on the neck to take of the old razor head and then it stayed that way until i put in the new razor blade. With this you have depress the button down manually regardless to put on the razor blade head. & it is a little more difficult to do than my old Atra Plus Razor handle. But overall, Super Safety Razors made an exceptionally well done effort on this handle. It well deserves the title they gave it: All Metal HEAVYWEIGHT Chrome Atra Compatable Twin Blade Razor. Emphasize the HEAVYWEIGHT as I expect that this will last me for a VERY long time due to its durablity & construction (it looks nice to). ************************************UPDATE******************************************************** This is a next day update Ladies & Gentlmen. I wrote my initial review on April 2nd, 2014 in the afternoon just after I received it. Here is the Rundown: 1) The handle's weight is really nice & doesn't detract from the overall performance. It has a nice balanced feel while Shaving. 2) The concern over the lack of a textured handle like the original Atra Plus Razor Handle, literally disappeared after the first few passes with my hands wet. So this is really a non issue & not a concrn. 3) The Handle/disposible blade action is LITERALLY the same, if not exactly identical to the original Atra Plus Handle. I actually tried it with both the off brand disposible razors & the Atra Plus blades. 4)The off brand disposible razers that came with it were actually better than expect. Still not as good as the original Atra Plus disposible blades, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than most other off brands/store brands that you could buy for less. (If the Atra Plus is a 9.5 on a 10 scale, most off/store brands are at a 2 to 4 at best. These off Brand/store brand I will give a 5 to a 6. Still not up to par to the REAL Atra Plus blades but really a waaaaaaaaaaaay better item than I have run into. 5)My only real complaint, is that it is a bit of a problem to take the disposible blade off & on this handle. After Looking & measuring it(& yes I measured), I realized two things. A) The width where the blade connects on the handle is just slightly bigger & B) the Mechanism is slightly different than on the Gillette Atra Plus Handle. Mind you this is my ONLY complaint, & I feel that it is a minor one. I will still give this a 4 star rating. Only because of the #5. I did email Super Safety Razors and not only informed them of this minor glitch with their Razor Handle but Complemented them on the overall niceness & durability of this Atra Plus Razor Handle. They were very polite, courtious, & professional. They also were very prompt in their response time back to me. I will actually be recommending this Shave replacement to everyone along with their Razor & brush holders. I am am VERY happy with this Shave Handle overall. It is well worth the buy

Turns out the Atra design doesn't work well for me, but this is still a GREAT Atra-style handle
I really wanted to love this. Because it looks awesome, and because Amazon sells these Personna replacement cartridges at a price even lower than many traditional safety-razor blades. However, it turns out that the Atra design simply doesn't work very well for me. Modern "paintbrush"-style cartridge systems like the Mach 3 or Fusion, which pivot from the bottom edge of the cartridge, are pretty foolproof. And I find that traditional fixed cartridges, like a Trac II, can offer a great shave too if you take a bit more time with them. But the Atra, which pivots from the center of the cartridge, feels like an obsolete prototype of a design. It pivot is "just enough" to take away your control over the blades, but not enough to offer comfort and smoothness. I managed to cut myself up pretty good with this for a week or so, before giving up. I then bought a Trac II style handle from the same company (the two products look almost identical), and found that I get a much better shave with the EXACT SAME cartridges (these Personnas are built to fit either an Atra or Trac II). I have nothing but praise for these cartridges. Amazon sells them for about 10 or 15 cents each, while Gillette name-brand Atra or Trac II cartridges are nearly two dollars a pop. If you're like me, and dislike the slimy "lube strips" that come on all cartridges these days, you'll actually LIKE the fact that the ones on these cartridges don't really do anything at all. If that sounds like a drawback, then I'd recommend taking the money you're saving on blades and invest it in better shaving soap or cream instead! Even though I had some really rough shaves, and don't care for the fundamental Atra design, I'm still giving this a few stars because it REALLY is a quality-built handle. Everyone's skin and shaving technique is different. So if you're somebody who actually does well with an Atra, then this would be a great replacement handle for you.

This is a really good handle!
It is not often that I will leave product feedback, but I have to say that for the past 20 years, I have own and used only ONE Atra handle. That previous handle was nicely weighted and gave me a very good shave each time I used it over the years. Sadly, this past August, the spring mechanism that attaches to the blades finally puttered out on me. So, I decided to get a new handle and I must say that this handle is also nicely weighted (slightly heavier than my previous Atra handle and I don't mind that) and provides me with a very close shave. It even pulls nicely across my face slightly better and smoother (since it's a bit heavier) than my previous handle. LOL! I placed my previous Atra handle in the drawer because I cannot get myself to throw it away after 20 years of good service. Prior to using my previous Gillette Atra handle, I used disposable razors and was never really happy with them. Good job, Gillette! I've been your customer for 20 years and I suspect I'll get another 20 years out of this new handle as well!

Very nice shave
I received a free Gillette Atra Plus Razor in the mail when I was 16 years old. That was 22 years ago. I recently dropped it and the button mechanism got fouled up. I have tried sensors and machs and none of them match the weight and comfort of a two blade system. They get gunked up while these atra plus can rinse clean. I ordered the "Vectra" to use as a handle and it felt cheap and lightweight. It felt more like a disposable. Now THIS handle is awesome. It feels nicer in the hand than my original. It weighs more. I'm getting a nice close shave once again. The release button seems a little touchy, but maybe it will break in. Note: The "Twin pivot plus" cartridges supplied with this razor are a bit on the clunky side. the side profile is wider than an atra. Now I am using this handle with atra plus cartridges available here on Amazon and couldn't be happier.

The Best A Man Can Get!! โญโญโญโญโญ
Excellent product!! This is without doubt the best substitute for the Gillette Contour Razor which sadly is no longer available. I purchased an original Gillette Contour Razor in 1979 and have used it every day for the past 46 years and it has always served me extremely well. However it has now sadly come to the end of its natural life so I have had to find a suitable alternative. I have tried other modern razors with multiple blades but none of them compare to the Contour and I was so disappointed that I could not get a replacement that matches this legendary Razor. After an exhausting in depth search I stumbled onto this little beauty, The Taconic Shave, and it has totally blown me away as it is absolutely brilliant and is a truly great replacement for my beloved Contour. It is fully compatible with the Gillette Contour blades and delivers a world class shave. It has a nice hefty feel to it with great balance and appears to be very robust so should last for many years to come and it looks good too. I would highly recommend this product to anybody that is looking for a suitable replacement for a Gillette Contour as it is probably the closest thing to the original. Finally, I am very happy with my Taconic Shave and look forward to a long and happy relationship!! ๐๐๐โญโญโญโญโญ
