Yes, they break easily, but they are SO convenient!
I have been using the Buttermate for more than ten years. Yes, they do break; I usually keep a backup in the cabinet. I've tried other butter dispensers, including the twist/ribbon kind, but this is much easier to use and much more accurate when dispensing a desired amount of butter, especially for a recipe. I only wish they were sturdier, perhaps made of metal instead of plastic, but I'm going to keep purchasing them for as long as they are available.

Prepare for love/hate
I will warn you now. There is a high probability that this contraption will lead to a strong love/hate relationship. We've used this butter cutter for about 12 years now and cannot imagine our culinary life without it. Sadly, the durability of this device is poor so mentally prepare yourself to replace it every couple of years. Each time, I asked myself if I am willing to spend $5-10 for something that breaks so easily and the answer is yes. I SOOOO wish that they'd make one of more durable materials as I'd happily pay $20 for it if it could last 10+ years.Let's get into the love part. It is so convenient to pull this from the fridge and easily portion out a teaspoon or tablespoon of butter. Need a thin pat of cold butter? Bam! There it is. Your alternative is to take a stick of butter from the fridge, open up the packaging, put it on a cutting board, and measure how visually how much butter you need. This device does all that for you in seconds without making a mess or requiring you to do all that setup. Looking at the negatives, it's going to break in various ways. I have lost count of how many of these we've gone through. 6-10? I've seen the most common breakage is around the flap that keeps the end closed. I've attached a photo of our last butter cutter and how we got around this piece breaking. (edited: I don't see a way to attach the photo :/ ) The next common breakpoint is the slider control on top and how it connects to the mechanism that pushes the butter forward. All in all, the negatives are outweighed by this device's convenience. I just hate how disposable it is. But after years I've become resigned to buying these in bulk and always having a new one handy for when the current one becomes too broken to work.

Love this, but it’s fragile
I’m on my fourth or fifth one of these going back many years. They are wonderful, but fragile. Count on having to buy another every year or two.

Love these, not sturdy though
These are great for a quick couple of tablespoons here or there without getting hands messy. It does break easily, though.Always make sure the slide is all the way inside before putting the stick butter in (do not use the butter to push the slide back, or push the butter against the slide to secure it, it will break the slide).

Needs Help
These break in one of two places. Either the latch on the bottom comes loose, (which it doesn't need a removable floor plate) , or the cutter wire breaks off at the end fastening. Needs to be made heavier.Buy more than one at a time.

I have bought this product multiple times because I love it so much but it breaks so easily!! They need to make this design in metal because this plastic is too flimsy.

Can’t be without it!
We will NOT be without these. Have used them for years and have given as gifts several times. Everyone loves them. If you use butter or margarine in sticks, these are delightfully useful. I always buy three at once. They can break but last long enough to make them well worth the money. And even after some component breaks, you can still use them for weeks or months longer until it is time to get a new one. Quality has been consistently good over the years. Wholeheartedly recommend them.

Essential to my life
This little butter gadget is essential to my life. I will always have one. They are now sold in 2 packs because they break, very easily. After you go through 5 or 6 of them you learn how to be careful and make them last 6 months or so. They will probably never improve them because they have customers like me who will keep buying replacements.
