Q: is it a pair or just one?

its the front of the bike and the back but you pretty much only put maybe two or three books between it, as they arent heavy and are not sturdy at all. I had to velcro mine to my kinds table just so that they would hold the books.

Q: Son found one in coffee shop likes to turn the pedal to make chain go round. Was going to get for his book collection. Does pedal turn chain?

I dont think so, and it is super light weight. it maybe only holds 3 heavy books. I had to put velcro at the bottom of it and on the table to get them to even hold a handful of childrens books.

Q: Are they heavy enough to actually hold books up?

Yes. It's heavier than it looks. I have 6 decent sized books between them, but could it could definitely hold more than that. It's really a neat bookend and a great conversation piece!! I highly recommend it!!
